Battery change procedure
2008 E320 Bluetec
I need to replace the six year old battery. Can I simply remove the old battery and install a new battery or do I need to use another battery to maintain voltage to the system while changing the battery? |

Most new batteries have a charge in them, so you can swap it and start the car and go.

I think he is concerned about computer/security systems. Is constant voltage needed while changing the battery?

Hmmm... I'd get one of the battery clamp savers... you could use a jump box with a cord plugged into the cig lighter outlet with the key in the acc position...

Just swap the battery and re-synch the windows, sunroof, and steering angle sensor. If the instrument cluster is synched with the COMAND head unit the clock will re-set itself. Check your seat/steering column memory. If the pre-set positions are still stored you're done. If not, you'll need to re-synch the motors.

key off is safer, but you'll have to be careful when disconnecting the battery if you have a battery saver attached to the cables...
autozone has a memory saver that plugs into a jump box, that has alligator clips to attach to the motor, or the jumper cable connectors.

I have a little number that you snap on a 9v battery on one end (like in smoke alarms) & then plug into the cig lighter. Works on cars that have cig lighter ALWAYS hot. 9v is enough to save radio settings.

you could use a clamp on 12v socket connected between the body of the car, and the glow plug relay lead (it's hot all the time) or the starter lead if that's easier to reach... the large wire on the alternator lead would work also...

You could make up a battery box with 8 AA lithium batteries with a cig plug on it and plug that into the outlet with the key in ACC position. That'd have plenty of juice to keep the system happy while changing a battery. And it would provide a full 12v

For a simple issue like this, Id be calling the dealer and using their recommended procedure.
