Auto Trans kick down Cable

I might be calling this cable by the wrong name, but it is similar to several automatic trans I've encountered. Anyway, I messed with this cable on my 1984 300D. I would normally mark the starting point, but ever since I turned it several times thinking to make it shift smooth. I messed it is up, but finally I've been lengthening the cable by turning it CW. this time I made a mark, so I am at the point where it shifts smooth and I can get on the throttle and it would downshift.

The bottom line my MPG increased dramatically since I've been turning this cable CW 1/4 at a time. Can someone educate me how this affects fuel consumption and performance. The car has plenty of performance of the line and rolling accel. Thanks in advance.

The timing is advance and the ALDA is 1/4 CW from full CCW, straight pipe exhaust and CAI.

The pressure control cable or Bowden cable as it's called around here is responsible for shift points more than shift quality. More slack means earlier shifts, more tension means later shifts. With absolute slack or the cable disconnected, your car will likely be in 4th gear by 30 mph. I can't imagine it would have a more dramatic effect than just going lighter on the pedal, and in my case I'd compensate with a heavier foot, but maybe you're really disciplined.
