1985 190D 2.5
 

I found a 85 190D 2.5 at a salvage yard the other day and its a 5 speed. It only has 166,000 miles on it, I wouldn't mind having the motor also. How much would you pay for the 5 speed and all the things I need for the swap? Also, would that 5 speed work in my 84 190D 2.2?

Are you sure it's an '85 190D 2.5? As far as US models, the 190D 2.5 wasn't offered until the '86 model year. I strongly suspect it's an '85 2.2 or an '86 2.5. The 5-speed should work with the '84 but you'll have to customize the prop shaft (not easy), the shift linkage if the 2.2 sits further forward than the 2.5 (not easy), and possibly the transmission cross member (easy). 5-speed and all the things are usually listed for $600-1200. Check the parts forum. How much would I pay? You'd have to pay me to shift a transmission :)

It must be a 86 then, customize the prop shaft? Wont I have to use the 86 drive shaft? $600 to $1200? That is a lot of money, I will call them and ask how much they want for it.

If you swap engine, transmission and prop shaft from 2.5 to 2.2, it should be a bolt-together deal. If you bolt the 5-speed to the 2.2, there's a slim chance the 2.2's existing prop shaft will work as is. I'm guessing it won't and the 2.5 prop shaft won't work as is either since the transmission will sit forward slightly behind the shorter engine. IIRC, taking the bell housing flange as a reference, the 2.2 sits further forward than the 2.5. Get out your measuring tape.

The transmission parts at a salvage yard will cost about $300. Someone selling the parts will want to recover his time and effort.

Why is the car at the salvage yard - accident damage, too far rusted to pass inspection, engine failure?
