Actually, the whole transmission is the same as 86+ 300D's, I understand. I found that out when I replaced the front tranny seal while swapping engines. The turbo-charger, intake & exhaust manifolds, and exhaust down-pipe are all different too. Also, the battery, starter, and alternator have heat shields, and I think the starter differs too, or at least the solenoid is clocked differently. When I installed the 81 engine, its down-pipe bolted up and the 85 starter fit. In general, 85 CA accessories (passenger side) fit 84-, but not the reverse.
