'05 E320CDI Trouble Fueling

First time I have had this happen I stopped this evening to fuel up, with a low tank. It was difficult to get it to take fuel: it would trip the auto shutoff on the pump repeatedly, and a couple times it burped fuel up. I finally got about 2/3 tank in and called it quits. A couple times after it tripped the pump nozzle off, I listened and it sounded like the fill pipe had filled with fuel, and I heard it gurgle down, then it would take a little more.
What is going on here?

Sounds like a clogged fuel tank vent. My truck does the same thing but it's due to the filler necks being nearly parallel to the ground (flatbed).

I agree it sounds like a tank venting issue. The air displaced by the new fuel has to go somewhere.

It is possible that the tank vent is clogged; we have some trouble with mud daubers from time to time.
Can someone direct me to the location of the tank vent? Does it vent back to the filler opening, or elsewhere? I assume it is different from the gasoline models (does it also have a charcoal canister vapor recovery system?).
This car is driven regularly: I filled it a couple weeks ago, never any problem 'till now.

Our ML does this same thing. Can't hardly fill that stupid thing up. And it gets thirsty often.....
