300TD rear shock mount
I've got all of the external pieces off of the rear subframe to pull it completely out. All that is left is the subframe bolts and the upper mount bolts to the pneumatic shocks and the undo the hydro lines to the shocks.
After opening up that area, the po had stripped the 5mm hex bolt to the top of the right shock. Any ideas about how to get this out AND where to get another bolt? Is this a MB part only? 1984 300TD |
What are you planning to do to the car?

Thanks for responding John.
I am rebuilding the rubber on the subframe, new hydro shocks and springs. Its going back in, so since I have a new shock, should I just drill it out? I guess I'm not "rebuilding" I'm replacing the subframe mounts, springs and shocks. The right shock is leaking, so I am replacing both. I've read up on the removal process and its coming along nicely, until this point. The 5mm hex is just round, almost like someone tried to over tighten or failed at one point to extract it with the wrong size. Do you think and easy out would work? |
take a picture of the bolt, external easy out may work... I don't remember what the top shock mount looks like

Okay, give me a minute or 2

Sorry about the dog hair. My black lab likes to ride in the back!

dremel a long notch across the top of the bolt, make it deep enough to use a large flat head screw driver on it.

Thanks JB3, good idea.

JB3, worked like a charm, thanks.

There is a kit available from Mercedes dealers which includes the bushings, lower and upper mounting bolts.
Part number for the kit is 123 320 0344. Think they are around $20 each. The upper mounting bolt itself, as far as I can tell from the diagram, is part number 914125008703 |
Mercedes made a change in the upper strut mount.
1st version up to Aug 82. the picture in my FSM shows it with a regular bolt head. 2nd version starting Sept 82. then the bolt head had the stupid 5mm hole. MB changed the upper rubber mounts and looks like they changed the sheet metal design by the drawing. I tried to pull a good set of Struts off a 85 300TD in PNP, and both sides rounded out. :( I think if I had one of these 2nd version cars, I would weld a nut on the head of the hex head bolt. You would have thought MB would have made it a 8 or 10mm bolt. Charlie |
