Filling a motor mount

Several people have posted on how they filled a motor mount with liquid urethane or Flexane. That is to prevent it from fully collapsing in the future. I wish I had done that with the Uro mounts I installed, though they are fine so far (1.5 yr in one car). Anyway, I got 2 transmission mounts, figuring they might need changing soon, and fairly cheap ($15 ea I recall). DEA brand, but marked "Germany" in the rubber. I tried a suggestion I made to others. Since liquid urethane is not easy to procure, I bought a tube of polyurethane caulk at Home Depot (~$8). A roofing version was the desired black. I have used similar before on my trailer and it is very strong and firm. Gorilla Glue is also polyurethane, as is most wood varnish.

It was fairly easy to fill the cavities and smooth with a putty knife. It takes a long time to cure, so do it ahead of time. I will wait longer than I thought since I crawled under the 85 yesterday and found the tranny mount still looked fine. Also checked the driveshaft flex disks while under there. I had enough caulk left to fill another mount for a Mopar minivan.

The disadvantage may be that your mount will be too stiff, but many would sacrifice that for more longevity and reliability. Of course, the polyurethane might also chemically affect the rubber. Unlikely, but I'll report back if a problem in a few years.

I've been using them to stiffen trans mounts for a while. Guess I would have over two years year now between two cars.

Professor Google and a phone wil allow you to procure urethane.

Fastenal has some but had to order it for me. $76 worth it to make 4 engine shock mounts with plenty left.

Make sure you order soft urethane - Shore A 30. Otherwise you'll have a terrible vibration on your hands.

...ask me how I know

Mach4 provided me with a filled trans mount. His work looks like it was straight from the factory. ’Twas stiff to start off with, but after about 2k miles I either have gotten used to it, or it has smoothed out.

I live to far in the stix to get to a Fastenal, so i bought 3M WINDOW WELD from a parts store....lots of guys on youtube using it. it is rubber friendly, and im not shure of the shore strength but iv used construction adhesive a lot b4 as well as liquid nails n this is definitely much softer when cured. softer than the origanal mount as well....
i bolted them back on last night n will b driving the car later today. ill let u know how it feels.
i think the density of it will b good as it kept the mount from collapsing but it is very malleable and will absorb shock.
I was only $27 dollars a tube and i filled 2 motor mounts with about 1/3 of a tube left.

Do any of you have any experience with reinforcing the differential mount using Urethane?

I've been having a slight clunk from the rear end of my SEC whenever the drive train loads or unloads.
It's also sagging, despite the main ~4" mounts being replaced, so I've been giving the diff mount the hairy eye for possibly being next up.

Don't know if the Gasser one looks the same this is the old one I replaced from My Car.
Looks like a more complicated job then the Motor Mounts. Note the Arrows pointing at the Steel Plates.

From what I've seen, that looks to be the same type of mount.
So, would those steel plates require filling in two passes, outside the plates and inside?

3m windo-weld

It's Shore 55-60.

When I googled it I found references from other make boards to people filling motor mounts with it.

If it's that hard it will be very harsh. You will regret it.

Shore A 30 is what you want.

this can be caused by high idle rpm also or low vacuum...

I just went through this. Start with the vacuum. How much do you know about the vacuum on this engine? I had a bad pump.
