85 300 TD Wagon Electrical Troubleshoot...

Aloha All

I have an 85 300 TD wagon that is acting very electrically wierd and I thought that some of you seasoned experts might set me in the right direction to figure out what is going on.

What is happening is that most but all of the time at night- when I turn on the lights- both flashers on the dash start to flash simultaneously and the fuel and temp gauges oscillate all the way up and down. The exterior turn signals and hi/lo headlights still seem to work correctly while this is going on. This happens whether the emergency flasher switch is on or not....

I just replaced the tranny with a rebuilt and put a new (used) fuel sender unit in the tank if that might have any bearing.

Any ideas what might be going on or suggestions as to where to start looking or how to go about correcting this?

As usual, I am still looking for a good 123 mechanic who would like to come to Molokai Hawaii and stay in our B&B in exchange for showing me some things and helping me work on my wagons.

With Aloha

Sounds like a grounding problem to me. Did they put back the ground wire when they installed the tranny?

Just a thought.
My 85 300TD uses dual element bulbs (1157 IIRC)on the front turn/park light and
someone had placed a single element bulb in one of the sockets causing some crazy issues.
Check for the right bulbs in the sockets.
The single element bulb shorts the park and turn signal together.
