Dry liners. Absolutely 100% dry. I will pay for engine rebuilds for everyone on the forum if they are wet liners.

$112 each is not so bad. Any reviews on the Mahle pistons?

Original equipment for many Mercedes engines (not all). Usually are more expensive than other alternatives. For example for my M102 Nural were cheaper than Mahle and Kolben Schmidt...

Great find on the $115 ea pistons, and incl rings and roll pins sweetens it. I still need to rebuild my 85 engine, but already have a set of used pistons (courtesy RollGuy). People in a Mopar forum fuss because a set of 8 forged pistons for the 273 cost $375 (vs $200 for 318 forged). Of course, a Chevy SB set is $90.

As far as the wet vs dry question, the block is totally dry where the sleeves fit. Just look up my post w/ photos where I show peeling the old liners out.

Does anyone have a handle on fit and part numbers for pistons and liners?
There appears to be 2 models available from tcp:

Pistons
Mahle: 6160306817,06033045057,0024902
KS: 6160306417,06033043053,137416

Liners
Mahle: 6010110010, 6033052053
KS: 6160111210

the "master rebuild list" posting says the piston is 6170301017. Looks close
but not quite there.

Those are NA pistons not Turbo pistons.... If you have a turbo motor these will not work.

Here is a link to some Turbo piston sets...http://www.prostreetonline.com/m/mercedes_piston-set.asp

Just checked and they are not in stock as the page says

Dude at Metric says all they can get now are the ones from Mercedes. They used to use Mahle etc but they stopped making them.

The reason to do this? Sleeves are fairly cheap and pistons are VERY pricey. If the pistons have failed in some way it might be cheaper to buy an engine from PnP and rebuild using those pistons. Like I said, the pistons generally last forever. If you REALLY need new slugs, this is NOT a place to cut corners. Pelican Parts likely has as good a price as any for quality parts.

Dan, and many others are correct.

The OM617 is designed / engineered to reuse the pistons for millions of miles of service.

This engine was / is used in class 8 HEAVY trucks, Heavy equipment, Marine / stationary generators, etc.

Finally Whunter points out which post was using FSM information....
I can't believe how many bad posts there are in this thread.....
A bunch of you have never seen a MB FSM.... you are relating things done by other makes... which do not at all apply to how these engines are designed.

Been on the piston hunt again and thought I'd revive this thread...

While the above may be true, the reality is that about 90% of the pistons on the motors that we pull apart are no good. In order to put a good motor together, it will take us 6 or 7 motors to come up with one good set of five pistons.
Metric Motors has confirmed a similar experience.

What sort of mileage are you seeing for good pistons/bad pistons?

There's not a set pattern based on mileage. Of course lower miles means better parts as a general trend, but we see plenty of lower-mileage motors that weren't taken care of (usually oil leaks that weren't addressed and the levels got too low).
