Ohhhh, I'm scared now. More on that particular topic, what steps should be taken to accomplish this?

Also, is this what you mean, VS??

Whatever you end up doing, cleanliness is essential. Go to the car wash and clean the whole side of the motor first. There is a specific warning about this in the FSM. A very small piece of junk can plug a piston cooling jet.

It's not that it is complicated to remove and install the box but it is hard to hold a 40Lb chunk of steel up while you line it up to the steering shaft and install the bolts at the same time. I replaced the box on my 300SD and my arms hurt for two weeks after fighting that stupid box and finally getting it installed.

Oh, and a couple weeks later, the steering box on my F250 blew a gasket so I have the pleasure of dealing with the same installation on a Ford.

Could it be balanced on something? I have a spare small-car jack that I could make a rig for to hold and balance it in place. I did more or less the same thing when I installed a new starter motor in my girlfriend's 240D.

It's gonna hurt if it slips off the jack and pops you in the kisser! I came close a few times myself. Next time I would have a helper or hoist it from above somehow.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but what is the "popper" for? Is this the tool needed to take the big arm off of the steering box?

you will need the popper/and the other tools in the kit to remove the tie rod from the pitman arm without destroying the boot/tie rod. I would NOT remove the big arm from the steering box!
