How much interchangability is there between the 240d & the 300d - w123 models?. I realize there is a difference between the engine size.

I am wondering as I am going to visit a friend out of province & will check out a local u-pick for some used MB parts as spares to fit my 82 240d. I'm thinking in the terms of mechanical parts such as alt. starter, vaccuum pump, relays etc.

Pretty much everything on the body/interior.
I would suggest picking up some spare "banjo" fittings and miscellaneous stuff like that in addition to good wood, parts that are better than the ones on the car you are driving, etc.. This stuff comes cheap from the pull-a-parts place and they don't weigh the wheelbarrow down too much.
TXBill is right about the a/c compressor - they are the same on both cars. The interior climate controls on my 240D are different on the 300D (haven't figured out yet how to get the a/c compressor to engage - what is that "dial" with the blue and white markings?). I think the power steering pumps are the same and probably some of the fuel injector piping. Try to have a mental picture of your engine bay when you are looking around
at the pull a parts place.
I would recommend purchasing a/c compressors, vacuum actuated devices, brake parts and steering lock mechanisms "new" but on the same hand I would not have any problems purchasing "refurbished" relays, cc amps, etc..
