I'm guessing top end too

This sucks my friend. I've been going through your video's which is kind of like going through JFK's assassination to his inauguration.

As it goes ,a 600 after the cam break.

Broken camshaft also my guess as it keeps oil pressure.
I've got a OM603 3.0L with 117,000 on it that I'd be willing to sell. Got to get rid of everything if the deal goes through on this new house in a very restricted subdivision. Gonna be hard to change, but in my case, it's needed. Anyway, you (or other forum members) are welcome to it. Over the next year, I'll be listing all the cars I have and parts as well as I make my transformation to suburbia. Stay tuned. |
Let us know what you find under the valve cover, if it does turn out to be a busted cam, I have one that I'll give you for the shipping. I really want to see you running again since you just went thru all this work. Pulling and replacing the cam is a cake job.

I have a used set if you want 'em. Unknown miles, but they would get you on the road.

It's deja vu with one fewer cylinder - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/324783-1992-300d-2-5-vacuum-pump-failure-ball-bearings-fell-into-timing-chain-6.html (scroll to posts 82 and 87).

Assuming that is a hydraulic lifter, does it break and then cause the valves or cam to break... or does a valve get stuck and then the lifter gets crushed as the cam comes around? I guess I am trying to ascertain if bad lifters cause the problem or if they are just collateral damage. Thanks.
And sorry about the engine. |

I also had a bad tick on the OM602 that wasn't cured with new lifters. Turns out the head gasket was failing, and gasket debris was clogging some of the ports in the main oil passage that feeds the lifters. The new lifters were ticking because they weren't getting any oil. I wonder if that might be what happened on your 603 head... one of the lifters was running dry, and self-destructed?? Bummer. You probably won't be able to tell if the head is salvageable until the head is removed for inspection. If the shop put it all together and gave the car back to you ticking like that, they screwed up. It NEVER should have been returned to the customer with that kind of noise. :nuke: |
