Odometer Question

All,

I have the usual "my odometer doesn't work" complaint.

I know all about the various repairs, so I'm not going to ask how to fix it...I just wanted to recount my experience, and see if anyone has had a similar one.

When I bought my car last weekend, the previous owner said "No, the odometer doesn't work"...and I was OK with that, as it's a common issue. When I began the trip to return the car home, I reset the trip odometer to 000 on a whim, and went on my merry way. Much to my surprise, BOTH the odometer and trip odometer worked flawlessly. However, my happiness was clouded at 249.9 miles when everything stopped. I managed to stop and reset the odometer, but it never would get past .9 miles again unless I kept my finger on the reset button and applied a very slight pressure.

Has anyone ever seen that issue?

Thanks,

Joe

Yup. When I first got my replacement speedo I didn't get the rheostat for the dash lights screwed in properly (as in I think I forgot to put the screw in), and of course that's the trip reset as well.

After one push it had everything cockeyed in there so it would go a bit and get stuck, and I'd push in just a little and it would take off again. I simply pulled the cluster back out, saw the screw sitting on the insulation, and had the 'aha' moment.

Thanks! I'm going to pull the cluster out anyway to check on the other odometer parts, so I'll see if the problem is something that simple.

if it won't advance past .9 or 9.9 it's the aluminum gear on the digit shaft... push it out, knurl it with vicegrips and push it back... done.
