Years ago, my first 'Benz needed glow plugs, so I bought Autolite at the Zone because they had them in stock. I did not want to wait, so I bought them. They did not last very long, and I changed to Bosch and have not deviated from there since......Rich

AUTOLITE GLOW PLUGS ,a big thumbs down .Im not sure how they still put these on the shelf , long life is what a glow plug should have in spades. I would give them 3 months max. and be pulling them out during my experience with the brand ,a few choice word during extraction. .If you have to go online to find the bosch pieces its well worth the wait .Even order an extra set for your cars future .You might have a problem in 3 yrs.
auto LITE ,its even in the name. A consumer reports.

All failed ones I have removed in my 2 cars (OM617.952 engine) before today were stamped "Bosch", as I recall. But, they may have been there when I bought the cars (don't recall buying Bosch). I bought a set of "CFP" glow-plugs for ~$6 ea on ebay, and installed qty two 2.5 yrs ago (21,000 mi). I removed a failed one today, so one tiny data point. The box has just "Ref No 0250201039", w/ no PN or country of origin, but China is a good guess. All failures have been "open-circuit" w/ no metal loss.

I have another group of "VSP" (<$10 ea ebay) and installed one today (details below). I also have a box of Autolite 1103 (haven't installed). Both are "Made in Taiwan".

Nobody mentioned Champion CH189. I see those on ebay for $3.79 w/ free shipping. Might be worth a risk for somebody pressed for cash. Worst a bad glow-plug could do is shed molten metal into your engine, probably destroying a pre-chamber and piston.

Vespark Industrial Co., LTD Item# PU-139, Application: BMW 93, Peugot 405, 605, Ford Scorpio 91-. ISO-9001.
Their website mentions only Fiat, but cross-references Bosch 0250 201 039, which rock shows for my engines, and also Beru GN 909. They list PU-178 for Benz 190/124/307 (??), but it is 2 mm shorter and my PU-139 are the same length as Autolite 1103. They have an interesting video giving power-up tests against other makes: http://www.taiwantrade.com/product/glow-plug-automobile-engine-1101658.html#productDetails
2 no-name brands (China?) fail after just a few cycles. They suggest HKT (Japan) is the standard to match.

More data points. Since changing glow-plugs is a chore, I document in my car's log book. I hope others will do so and post since we need "real data", not just impressions. My son has the 1984, so this is for my 1985 300D (OM617.952). Originally, all were Bosch but don't know when installed. At 337,933 mi, I installed CFP brand in cyl 3,4,5 and cyl 2 at 341,427 mi. Current mileage: 364,733 mi.

To date, 3 of the 4 CFP failed:
cyl 5: 21,467 mi life
cyl 3: 25,987 mi life
cyl 2: 23,306 mi life
cyl 4: 26,800 mi, still alive
Quite consistent lives. I might expect cyl 4 to go soon.
Of course accuracy may be +/-5000 mi since I don't check glow-plugs every week, and only when my son brings the car home (can be 8 months).

cyl 1: 359,400 mi Bosch failed (unknown install), installed VSP.

I currently have VSP PU-139 in all 5 cyl. No failures yet, but 5333 mi max so far. VSP is a Taiwan company with a website (post 35) which suggests strict design and quality control. Time will tell.

BTW, I use a ratcheting box wrench to change glow plugs (8 mm for nut, 12 mm for body). That lets you easily swing between injector tubes. Before that, it took much fiddling w/ regular box wrenches. Indeed, you would do better to remove the injector tubes. I only change glow plugs as they fail.

Looking at my records. I had starting problems back in February 2015 at 317K miles. I replaced all four glow plugs with made in Germany Monarks and it was fine till about September of last year when it became almost impossible to start at about 336K miles. In November I replaced the Monarks with made in France Bosch. Two of the Monarks had failed and the third would only glow slightly. I'm now at almost 340K and so far so good on the French Bosch...

When I rebuilt the head on my 190DT, I installed a new set of Bosch plugs. They now have 118,000 miles. The prior set of Bosch went about 150K miles. I have a set of Beck Arnley (probably Monark) plugs on the shelf, which I will install later this year as a PM.

Autolites are good for 25k miles, max.

I've had my 300CD for 17 years. I dont know what gp's are in it as I've never had to replace any of them.

My Chevy's (6.2 PU-Suburban-Blazer) are a different story. Those 6.2's ate the glow plugs. I had to pull the engine on the Blazer to replace 2 plugs next to the evaporator on firewall. The gp tips burned out & I could not remove them. It was remove evaporator (for access) or pull engine.

Those two were Autolites, , , , , ,

I will not go back to Bosch glow plugs.
I also preferred Beru from past experience, then when it came time to replace GP's on my '99 E300D turbo I looked high and low for Berus and had a hard time finding them except for a German supplier. So I ordered them and paid the extra for shipping.
One of them failed within a week
seems nothing is sacred!

I do not think the life span of the plugs is the most important consideration in OM606. More important is to remove (replace) them at an interval where they are readily removed for reaming and anti-seizing. I do mine in July, probably too conservative, but if you have ever had them stuck...........

Has anybody tried HKT (Japan) brand? The VSP (Taiwan) video linked in post 35 suggests HKT is the standard they strive to beat. Perhaps HKT doesn't make a PN which fits our diesels.
