Okay thanks Skippy for answering my question. I am much more informed thanks to you response. Is the starter difficult to remove as a diy project?

Disconnect the battery first! Turn the front wheels left and right to where the center link allows the starter to be removed. Mind the vacuum line to the transmission modulator and the wires for the flywheel rpm sensor.

I haven't done a 603 starter. On a 617 in a W123 it's a pretty easy job. I think the last one I did was two hours including coffee breaks and pausing in front of the tv. And yes, disconnecting the battery first is a really good idea.

Thanks Sixto for that information. I know a local guy the will rebuild the starter while I wait. He did an alterntor while I waited for $28.00.
