Water pump housing leak.

This concerns my 1980 300sd. Yesterday I noticed lots of coolant on my garage floor as I was pulling out. I could not locate the leak while the car was running and it appears that the leak only occurs when the car has been shut off for about an hour. Tonight I found that the leak is coming from the bottom of the water pump housing. The pump itself seems to be completely dry. I have changed water pumps on these diesels before but never have messed with the housing. Anyone change one of these out before? Any suggestions on tackling this job?

you will need gasket...

The water pump has a weep hole on top. Carefully inspect that short hose on the t'stat housing.

I had the same issue, noticed water on the garage floor.

if indeed, it is the housing, find out where it's leaking from.
the housing does unbolt from the block, and any parts yard 240 or 300 housing will work.

If you pull the pump, be sure to use anti-seize on the bolts when you reinstall.

Is this not what the OP speaks of sold here at Pelican parts.
Of course the OP may need just the gasket.
This may not be the correct part numbers for you , so double check. These numbers are for turbo 617 engines.
But maybe this will get you on the right track to looking for parts.
Housing Part number 617-201-05-01
Housing to block Gasket Part number 616-203-01-80
Water pump gasket part number 616-201-00-80

Water Pumps sometimes have 2 weep holes but almost always they have at least one on the Bottom of the Pump.

If some sort of Hole is eaten through the the Housing behind the Water Pump it may be possible to repair it with JB Weld or those low temp Alumiloy Alminum Rapair Rods.

For both repairs any corrosion needs to be removed down to the bare metal.

Over on another forum someone broke the studs/bolts that go through the Water Pump and the Water Pump Housing.

I broke one of the screws when installing a new water pump on one of these cars.

That was the last straw, should not have bought that car. It went to the crusher.

You have to expect setbacks. If you lived in a really serious corrosion area like I do especially . It is the unusual when everything goes easy.

Of course you learn how to get stuck things separated etc with the least agony. I would not work on a local car without a lot of helpful things..
