How bad was the smell inside? I looked at restoring an engine fire vehicle and then gave up just because of the stink.

An SL is on my list of vehicles I'd love to swap the CD for, which means it's also on my list of things I'd like to buy/restore, but I'm thinkin without having a parts SL already this would be more expensive than buying a running car?

On my fire car even the intake manifold had melted, dunno what the extent is on this one.

Is title salvage?

you guys have all the information I do on the car (well, I do have a few more pictures...) it's not far from me, so if someone really wants me to, I'd happily go take specific pics or video and get a hands on impression of the car.
I'm SURE the parts are worth well over his asking price, but it takes WORK AND TIME to get those parts sold... that interior is likely worth his asking price alone. throw in the two tops, if they are in the same shape, and various other parts... yeah, 2500 in no time... (the emergency flasher lists for over 600.00)

$300 is the right price for a haul away.

He probably feels $300 is too low and has gone for his ideal price in "retaliation"

I'd most definitely buy something like that for $600 to $800 may be more if I got a good feeling from it when I went to see it...
Recall the guy had NO price. He asked John to make an offer. John did, then the guy suddenly has a price. NO price John offered would have flown. The seller is insecure and afraid to name a price on his own. So, when you name a price, all of a sudden he's offended and shoots a 6X price back. PASS.

There's no question it's worth a lot piece meal, but not as a haul away package. Certainly not valuable with a burned out engine compartment.

I think you move too soon. This is part of the bargaining process. So OK John doesn't want the car - but if he did I feel that there could be some whittling down to a price that would be acceptable to both parties.

If you want the car you don't give up so quickly do you? I also know the feeling of "oh no this seller is a right effing DH" but with a bit of persistence sometimes it can be worked out. I find it best to remain positive whilst being realistic and to try and leave previous negative negotiation experiences behind.

These are good arguments for the $300 offer:

1978 450SL

1977 Mercedes-Benz 450SL. (Ruby's Story) 89,800 mi.

yeah... that 77 is a STEAL... too bad about the seats.

I love the manual HVAC on both of them.

it looks like I'm getting the car for free and selling the motor on consignment...

How did you manage to talk your way from 1700 bucks to free minus the motor?

I think he got talked into pulling the motor and being paid the pleasure of taking home what remains.

he's gotta move the car this month, and I told him there's no way he'll get more than 500 the way it sits. the engine compartment needs to be cleaned up, and the motor needs full service, to get it in perfect running condition, and looking good. then the motor needs to be listed, and IF it's in great shape, it'll sell WAAAAY better in the car, than on a stand. much better to sell the motor if it's clean, running, and in a car to feel the power.
43K on the ODO, so the engine and trans should be in immaculate condition and an easy sell for the right buyer...
I said I'd do the prep work and store the car, and list it for sale, and split the money on the motor, and keep the rest.
he's thinking on it.
