OM617 5-speed?

I've stumbled across an add for a grey market european '78 MB 280 CE with the 4-speed tranny swapped out with a later model 5-speed. The CE was a gas V-8. Would the bellhousing be the same as an OM617 such that the tranny would be a bolt in to a 240 or 300D of the same era?

Searching for pictures, it appears to me that the 280 E/CE had the starter on the right... so I'd say:

I'm pretty sure the 280ce has an inline 6, not V8.

Unfortunately its about 90 miles from me and from talking with the seller one time I would want to visually verify. The car had the motor pulled for a rebuild then got side tracked so no motor. Owner says its a european in his family for 25 years import with cloth interior and manual climate control. His current price is too high at $2,200 and he's not sure if he can find the flywheel? Why can't these folks with scrap worthy cars price them for scrap prices - that way I can end up with 15 projects in the back yard waiting for my attention.

and that other in california is mine.

i'm only putting it up to get interest and if someone wants to give me lots of cash for it.

the goal is to make enough money to buy a five speed mercedes built tranny (or swap) for my w460.
