So I finally just ended up pulling the head today. I was not even thinking about doing it today at 3:00 but my neighbor was pulling his motor so I got ambitious. Had the head off by 10:00. First time pulling a head too. Attached are pictures. Nothing glaringly wrong.

What all should I have done while it is off?

What parts do I need?

22 heat bolts (3 different sizes)
Head gasket kit
Crossover gasket
Steam seal set

Anything else?

Can I reseal the pre chambers. I think they were leaking. How do I do that?

I can do that tomorrow when I have more light. It was getting late.

My neighbor, who was pulling his engine, is a BMW mechanic. He came over and helped some (pulling the guide rail pins). He could not believe how clean it was compared to the BMW diesels he had worked on.

Pretty happy so far for doing this my first time.

i too am removing the head from my 602,when you pulled the upper chain guide did it come right out when you pulled the two pins? i pulled my two pins the other night and the chain guide wont budge, also did you use a picker to lift the head? or did you just use elbow grease

cheers

Pulled both pins, lower one was a pain, but left guide in. Way too big to get out or fall down but you can get the head off with it there.

Two people to lift the head out was no problem. You could do it yourself but is much better with two.

Hope that helps!

so you pulled the two pins but left the guide in, i wonder why then you need to even pull the pins out? was your intention to pull the guide out? the tool i bought pulled the pins in like 10 seconds, another question that connection at the rear of the head that goes into the oil filter, how does that come off?
and yes all that helped thank you

cheers

I left the guide there because it was on the chain and not coming off. It stayed with the block and chain when you pull the head up. That's why you have to remove the two pins.

That is for the fuel heater. It bolts onto the oil filter housing with two bolts. Remove both of those and the ring clip that is around the connection at the head. Then after some wiggling it will pull straight out. Kit should come with new o-ring.

I see nothing in any of those pics that says the head was leaking...

Gasket looked fine too. How else could I get bubbles in the coolant though?

No? I see multiple points where the fire rings are possibly breached. I'd certainly surface that head, and do what you can to clean up the block.

+1 cyl 5 head shot looks to me like the gasket was not sealing. There is a clean circle around # 1 to 4 but not so much on 5.

I see oil soaked surface from lifting the front of the head, and oil dribble... However, looking at the block pic, one piston shows possible cavitation damage...
