Just keeps running

Well the 1971 just keeps running, key out etc etc. I shut it down and came inside. Tomorrow I will look during daylight at vacuum lines. However I am curious, is there a difference on the old W115 vs. the W123 on how the shut down works?

Also my pull starter switch made a weird "pop" noise the last start before this issue. So I am wondering if there is a chance that could be the issue

Thanks

It should have a mechanical shut off if all is original. Does your car have a replacement engine? In a previous thread, you wrote "Looking at getting new injectors for a 220D 1971/1980 240D". Is your engine an OM615 (220D) or an OM616 (240D)? And if it is an OM 616, did it come from a w123?

Well I went out and looked. Where the cable mounts to the IP the cable was hanging off the side. But I can't figure out what holds it in place. Anyone have a picture of one still hooked up, I feel that the mount broke. I temporarily zip tied it for work tomorrow.

Here is a brief thread on the subject.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/320735-start-stop-cable-adjustment-ip-1968-220d-w115.html

The image in that thread from the EPC is not great. Basically, there is a black rubber square with a slot in it at the end of the gorilla knob cable. The IP lever slides in that slot. And there is a cotter pin which holds the black rubber square onto the IP. Probably your cotter pin fell out or broke. Or perhaps the black rubber part cracked. Hopefully it is just the cotter pin. As an aside, the slot in my black rubber thing is totally worn so that it is no longer just a slot, but it still appears to work. I bought a replacement cotter pin at a local ACE hardware store and it worked fine. When installing it, just make sure that the pin doesn't cause any binding of movement of the IP lever or the black rubber thing.

Also note in the attached thread a brief discussion of a missing washer. Perhaps your car needs that as well.

I'll take a photo of mine and post it if you still need it for reference.

On mine I think it's a C-clip but could be a cotter pin then a washer. Either way, get a thin nylon washer to help the arm rotate while the cable pulls/pushes it. This will prevent the pin or C-clip from binding.

If we could get this forum ported to the Forum Runner app for smartphones, I could post right from my car. Ahem! Hint, hint (to the moderators.)

I'm not near my car but I'll get the photo taken and posted today sometime.

PM me if you'd like to just give me a call and I can email you a photo directly from my cell phone. Technology!

@Phil: This forum is Tapatalk supported . Seems to work well other than for some quirks.

Here it is

So here's a photo of what is going on under there. I couldn't get focus any closer with my phone and while I am a photographer, I didn't have a periscope or mirror handy to enable me to use my regular camera. Anyway, on my IP arm there is a tiny cotter pin which holds the cable fitting to the shaft of the IP arm.

I hope this helps!
