CCA requirements for a W123

OK so what are the recommended CCA for a W123. I see supposedly direct fit batterys from 675 CCA to 900+. These are Group, H8, 49 and 93. Which is the best combination of fit and performance. Also will a 600CCA AMG battey work in a pinch?

I use the battery with the highest CCA I can get.

Okay, could a number of things.

No start, state precisely what you are experiencing.

Does the starter engage at all?

Is it slow?

Are you in park or neutral?

Does the glow plug light illuminate?

The solenoid clicks but the starter will not crank. The GP light is on and I've tried neutral, park and the Neutral safety switch bypass test all with the same results.

Even swapped the starter out with a know good and tested one since the previous one has an unknown number of years/miles on it.

I'll be having the one I removed tested as well as a means to further aid in trouble shooting.

I'm pulling the batt to have a full load test run on it at the local parts store as well. I stil think that might be the issue so going to rule that our as well.

not trying to point out the obvious, but make sure the ground strap is going from the body to the starter bolt. If the car isn't in P or N, it won't engage the solenoid, not hearing a click. good luck

if the starter is KNOWN good, and will not engage from the bypass junction on the fender, either your ground strap is not connected/dirty, or the terminals on the battery are dirty/corroded, or the battery is dead.

Okay, my vote goes to a weak battery.

If you have a multimeter, take a reading.

Weak batt it was. Harry homeowner testers just are not good enough to load up the batt like the ones in the shops. 470 output at 60 deg and very slow to recover.

Sulfa-ted would be my guess. I thought a Deka would last more than a couple of years. Have an Auto-light gold H8 with a nice big Made in Germany sticker on it. Might be a Bosch????

Car starts like a champ. I did double check and clear the chassis ground and the neg cable just to be sure.

Cable replacement coming soon and I agree with the #2 suggestions. I'm going to make my own so they look like the OC cables. It's less than $40 for all the pieces I need including brass terminals.

Thanks for all the help.

Highest CCA is good sometimes, but the higher CCA a battery has the shorter the life span of a battery because the electrode plates will be thinner and lighter. The best way is get a sufficient enough CCA's to get the job done and have a higher reserve capacity or Ah (amp hours). With this type, you will get a battery with thicker plates and longer life.
