You could remove the Plug on the Fuel Injection Pump and take it to a Hardware Store and have them check it with a Thread Gauge or compare it to the threads on Bolts they have in stock.

I know I can do that but the reason I ask the question in the first place is so that I do not HAVE TO do that.

[edit] I previously said M17-1.5. I was told it's M18-1.5

Sorry, I was just saying what I would do if I had not bought myself a Thread Gauge several Years ago.
Granted there is a Hardware store close by making it easier for me to do that.

Major diameter of M17-1.5 is 0.669 inches. That may not have enough meat to machine a hole in a bolt to fit an RPM sensor from a 617.9xx, which from memory, may be too big to fit ccomfortabily. I can't find my spare RPM sensor otherwise I'll measure it. If you have an rpm sensor handy, please measure. If it won't fit, I'll have to come up with one that will. The purpose is to build a timing light.

I have a loose sensor but the probe has a 1/2" diameter case. I'd have to break it to see just the probe.

I've seen bicycle crank sensors that might fit.

1/2" diameter is about the size from memory and too big for M17 x 1.5 IMO. Good idea with a bicycle wheel sensor. Will look into it.

What is the environment behind the M17 x 1.5 plug? Is it under engine oil pressure? Sorry for the hijack.

I don't know the sensitivity of the probe you have in mind but the RIV sensor slides into an ~8mm passage that corresponds with the business end of the locking tool shown at the top of this page. The plug threads are about 3cm from the RIV tang.

If I were to use the RPM sensor, I would not break the plastic but use it as it and will have to machine a hole in the M17 x 1.5 bolt so the sensor can be mounted straight and glued in securely with the wire brought out sealed with epoxy. It just seems too big in diameter.

Edit:

So the probe I need has to be smaller in diameter than the business end of this lock tool, which is approx 8 mm?

The picture in post #25 shows the tunnel leading to the RIV tang relative to the M17 threads in the IP case.

The IP is more or less open to the crank case but I don't think the governor section is subject to oil under pressure, just splashing to keep moving parts slidy.

That's the one. The direct viewing angle doesn't show the depth of the inner diameter. Seems like you should use the tunnel to aim the sensor.
