Once again I am super pleased by a 240D with a 4-speed near unstoppable nature in winter conditions. Given the addition of snow tires, it will putter through everything, passing cars with 5 times the power.
Everything about these cars that makes them sluggish dogs in regular driving, are benefits in snow driving. The low power to high weight, the easy to apply and feather clutch, the narrow tall stock tire size, ect.

To get into work this morning I had to bash down a 2 foot tall, 5 foot deep snow berm built up by the plows, and the 240 rolled right over it like it wasn't there, even on an incline.

IMO these are the perfect cars for winter driving if you are using a Rwd platform. (gush over)

Even without snow tires, they're still tanks. We had quite a bit of snow a few weeks ago here in Washington. My '79 4-speed plowed through everything without snow tires or chains.

That's quite impressive, especially the snowbank thing. Snowbanks are what finally stop our Corolla in the snow and the reason we take the Sienna minivan instead -- 2500 lbs v. 4300 lbs is a big difference.

If I were buying two cars all over again, I think I'd get the two 240s: the Volvo and the Mercedes. The 617.95 is just so overpowered .

I agree 120 percent. I had an automatic 240d and it was wonderful, exactly as you describe. I miss that car as a runabout and winter car.

'87 300TDT weights a ton...Michelin XIce-2 all around...totally unstoppable. I'm quite impressed, plus years ago I drove all the usual Audi quattros etc....I like that you can remove the snow tires when the weather improves, and then all the great things about a RWD car are still there (and no need to haul the AWD components around when you don't need them!). I recommend the Michelins, or Blizzak WS60 (now I believe called WS70) as amazing snow tires.

I have never lived in the snow... well I was born in Iowa and lived there for less than two years...

I mean I have never lived where it snowed since before I was two but from what I see, the salt would keep me from driving a nice Benz. I have driven an Audi Quattro wagon in the snow and it seemed to do just fine!

For giggles I drove the 280E around my untreated neighborhood yesterday afternoon. I almost didn't make it back home after that. I don't know if it was the extra power or the lack of snow tires but every turn almost got me sideways.

hell yeah, if you think im scraping up my thin paint which is porous and bonded with the ice getting that sheet of snow covered ice off my hood, you have another thing coming.

However, I only drove city streets to work, and its a non issue under 40. You will be happy to know I did have to go about 30 miles on the highway, and scraped off the snow then after the engine heat had loosened its ice bond a bit and the whole thing came off in sheets.

Maybe if good examples weren't getting so hard to find - especially here on the east-coast. Regardless of how good a 'snowmobile' it might be, I've had too many rusty ones to ever let my 'nice' 240D out in the snow!

its the automatic. I had to borrow the wifes 300TD to get some supplies, and the automatic breaks free on the same exact snow tires where the 4-speed does not. Its a lot easier to drift in it

Twice the power, and less connection to the wheels from the driver. I imagine the 280E has to be similar.

The salt is busily eating away at her car, hopefully my recent rust repair lasts through the winter
