Any Turbo / Exhaust Manifold Failures Out There?

Fellow dieselheads,

my recently-acquired 300DT has a faint noise that may be a bad exhaust manifold gasket.

It increases with throttle pressure, and nearly goes away at idle.

It also sounds like it is in the cylinder head area, so I doubt if it's a lower end issue. Oil pressure is ~1.8 bar at hot idle.

I haven't yet done a compression test to determine if it's a bad exhaust valve, assuming that the previous owner may have neglected valve adjustments-

I did a search of the entire diesel discussion and found no threads relating to exhaust valve or turbo gasket failure, so I'm tossing this out to all of you--

Has anyone on the forum ever had a burnt exhaust valve or failed turbo/exhaust manifold gasket?

Please advise,

I've heard of bad (well, leaking) exhaust manifold gaskets, and had that on my '87 300D. A friend of mine has an 84 300D with a bad leak in that area (hasn't diagnosed it yet). I think it's fairly common, I've heard of several others as well.

I'm not sure about the valve problem. I don't think it's very common...

I had a leaky exhaust manifold gasket and a cracked expansion bellows, (the corrogated steel piece between the front and back exhaust manifold on the six's) I replaced the manifold gasket and enpansion bellows but the leak came back. whenI did the head I had the exhaust manifold shaved since it was severly warped from the exhaust gas heating it up differentially.
Never had a leak on my non-turbo cast iron heads.

failure

I was cleaning under the bonnet last year and sprayed water on her vitals. Started to stall and blew a little smoke out her tail. Leaky gasket. On the 300 SD it is all one piece (intake/ehhaust). I just took everything apart and put it back together with a little silicon. Works great.

I have seen the joint between the exhaust manifold and the turbo leak. Just a thin metal gasket in there with four studs on the exhaust manifold and four nuts on the turbo. Nuts on turbo are kinda hard to tighten properly due to problems getting wrench on them. I found one completely missing one time! Think they took a 17mm wrench.

Bob K,
What did your car sound like before the fix,
and
was there any noticable increase in power afterwards?
