Hey guys, so I posted the Craigslist ad so you guys can take a look at the picture's. The story behind this car is the lady's husband died 5 years ago and the car sat ever since. She said she wants to take it to the scrap yard next week and I told her to hold off on it until then. I want to buy it just don't know if it is a smart decision. This was my Craigslist ad

Buy it. If it was near me the ad would have been deleted.

um if you have somewhere to keep it then buy it. even if you get it home and the motor is too much work to get going, just clean it up and resell it as a rolling chassis...

It`s a Diamond in the rough.

Give it a good bath, blow the leaves out of the cab...how did they get in there??? open window? Hmmmm did water get inside????

If the body is solid you can always throw in a Turbo Engine if this NA engine has issues. But most likely just drain the fluids, change the filters and fire her up and see what you have.

First pull the injectors and pour in some Marvel Mystery oil and let it sit for a day or so. then turn the engine over by hand incase there is a stuck ring etc... then stick the Injectors back in and see if she will start....after you bleed the air out of the lines.

Our 240D runs just fine and we run with the big guys out there. a 300D has one more cylinder. around here the traffic is at a standstill a good part of the time anyway.

Thank you guys so much for all your responses and advice. I really appreciate it. As you can tell, I'm not too familiar with these cars. But my dad did have several w123 back in the day and he got me into them. I will keep you guys posted if I pick it up next will. I'll be back Wednesday to let you know. Thanks again for everyone's help!

At the very least, it looks like a good parts car to me, for "$200.00."

You shouldn't have any problems driving that 5-cylinder car at highway speeds, or any speed. If our 4-cylinder 240Ds could do 80 mph, I don't see why that one wouldn't. As far as downshifting goes? That can be done by hand too, I've been selecting gears in my MB diesels like forever..... That's another non-issue.

Probably not. Same goes for the transmission. How about some pics of the engine compartment? That should give some clues as to how it's weathered the time it's just been sitting... You just don't know until you spend some time with it to see the extent of rehab necessary.

I think you should get this car.

That said, be forewarned that I also bought a 'Benz that had been sitting for ten years, and the window motors, AC compressor, alternator, starter, antenna motor, and sunroof were all toast -- seized up with rust. The climate control unit was also toast (although I had Gen II, you have the evil servo ).

I guess I would say that if you want to get this car going, I would count on spending a bunch of $$$ on accessories or buying a parts car.

I was considering buying another w 123 and put them together, or part it out. I'm still looking into it. At least it's only 200. So it might not be a big loss

Don't buy another car....don't consider pulling the engine from this one....don't consider parting it out....these a guy who would fix this up and then ask 25k for.....get it home....scrub the hell out of it and then see what you have....mind you all brakes will also need to be gone through....and those are likely steel wheels....sitting with them in the dirt....means they may very likely be rusted through....nice car for 200$ and only 98k on the clock

I'm gonna go see it again Tuesday. Hopefully I can pull through and bring it home that day and take more pics. Do you think that this has the same speedometer problem like the rest of the w123's?

I was hoping to find another mb 123 and swap parts into it. Or part it out. I really want to get this baby fired up and running again.

I don't have pictures of the engine but I did look at it and it didn't look tto bad. I honestly don't know how it should look at this age and mileage. I will take more pictures and hopefully someone can help me post them up here

You mean odometer ? That's what I was wondering.

Some common ways to see if the odo is approximately accurate: the steering wheel should still have lots of little textural ridges in it (this one appears to be taped over, so this won't help you), the brake and accelerator pedals should not be very worn, and the seat bottom should not be shot through.
