Replacing the Glowplugs on the '1998 E300, With Me Luck!

So, the CEL and pig tail came on and the car is due for inspection this month so I'm forced to do this now. At least one is bad. Trying NGK this time.

We'll see how long this takes...

Make sure the engine is hot before you start the job. Last one I did I actually backed one of the gp's almost all the way out with the engine running.

The #5 plug was a completely open circuit. It came out instantly with a short burst on the trusty 12v impact driver.

New plug is back in, codes cleared and the engine test run.

Do you use a low setting on the impact or something? A friend wants help doing his on his '97 and Ive just started reading about the process. The car has 315k so I'd think they've been done before.

No low setting on this one. It's small and I just pull the trigger progressively until the plug breaks loose or the tool is running wide open. All of my plugs were pulled out a few years ago and silver anti-sieze was applied so I suspect that's why I have no problem.

The plug that came out had a MB logo so I assume it was original.

This is the driver I use:

Shop Hitachi 12-Volt 1/4-in Hex Drive Cordless Impact Driver at Lowes.com

It came as part of a kit. The price for this listing is crazy, Lowe's sells the kit (when it's available) for about $130.00

Congrats, I went with Buer as my replacement also #5 Bosch went out after 28 months.

Capable of 840 in/lbs. or if you prefer 94 newton meters of driving torque which is above the sheer force of a glow plug.

You are likely correct in that the anti seize and EGR bypass helped.
