1983 BMW 320i- If I ever get a gasser!

this would be it.

1983 BMW 320i coupe

I have seen the motor on this and it looks like a 240d.

That 2 valve M10 is agricultural to say the least. Personally I'm a fan of the 16v M42 in the later E30s.

Engine design goes back to the early '60s but has a pretty good reputation. BMW 2002 (carbed) and early 320i (EFI) are 2 liter. For emissions reasons, later 320i engines were switched to a CS injection and downsized to 1.8 liter. Camshaft and rocker-arm shafts inserted from the end of the head so any major cam or rocker repair requires head removal.
CS injection unit is wedged under the intake-manifold and the plastic fuel injector lines get very brittle at this age, so hard to work on and makes starter-motor replacement extra difficult. Also, no power-steering was availible on the 320i, so with the fat 13-inch tires usually found on these cars, it's a bear to steer at parking-speeds and replacement tires may be hard to find.

Happy Motoring, Mark

One of my friends had one. It was supposed to be a first car for his daughter, but he liked it so much he ended up keeping it for himself.

I had a silver one with a 4 speed trans and blue cloth interior when I was a kid. Yes great car. Thanks for the memory

My first car back in Scotland was a 1983 E21 316 (1.8L), it really was a 318 but they were badged as 316's for some reason.

It obviously had the nice euro bumpers and no ugly side marker lights. 5 speed manual gearbox.

I upgraded it with BBS front and rear spoilers, twin-choke weber carb, M-sport steering wheel and Alpina 13" multi spoke alloys.

It was definitely a fun car with lots of good memories.

My oldest brother's first car was a black/tan 320i - this was in 1983 or so. The car was cool and fun to drive, but the E30 really kicked the crap out of it in all ways. The E21s are so cheap because you're either better off going older and getting a 2002 or going newer and getting the E30s.
