1980 240D Alternator bracket bent and cracked by PO

I was changing my oil tonight and thought I'd investigate an intermittent cold-weather alternator belt squeal and found the part of the bracket that holds the belt tensioner both bent and cracked. I can only assume someone torqued on it without loosening the other bolts.

Where do I find such a part for a 240D? The long tensioner bolt is also bent and very corroded.

I clean and bend these back into shape all the time.

These may help you.

206 is a one piece unit. Much easier to remove the alternator if 158 is loosened first

BEFORE bolt 206 is TOUCHED, loosen nut, 227, and bolts, 158 AND 239!
the tensioner will smoothly adjust, and the bolt will have little stress on it.

as you can see, the parts are not cheap.

parts yards are stocking less and less of these cars. lemme know if you need a bracket. I may even have a bolt.

also, post a pic of the bracket, maybe it's repairable.

I'll take a photo of it asap. It's cracked but I have access to welding equipment. This vehicle isn't a looker so function first.

Okay confession time. I have just been limping this thing through because of this polar vortex crap. The belts would seal for a few minutes and quiet down so onward I drove. Finally the other day I'm on my way home from work and my battery light and power steer start simultaneously going on the blink.

Both belts at once? Weird.

I loosened both the power steering pump and the alternator and found the crank pulley to be pretty freaking loose. Now the pulley appears to be attached to the harmonic balancer firmly but it's loose from the crank and I can just spin it. I managed to get a socket on the big 27 mm bolt without pulling out the radiator but it appears to need many turns to be tight.

From what I can tell I need to remove the balancer and pulley and replace two dowels that known to be too large? Maybe there's a definitive fix for this on the forums.

Will I need to remove the radiator?

Here is the information you need.

I also have a 240d (1978) with a mangled alternator tensioner. I tried getting a replacement, but when the Pick-N-Pull didn't have the 240d listed on the online inventory, I ended up pulling one from a 300d, I think a 1980.
Here's the problem: These are totally different tensioners and mounting plates. The '78 240d has the "star bolt" style tensioner, not the "L bolt" tensioner pictured above. Here is an image from another post:

Both sides of part 176 are bent and cracked. A piece of the side where the star is supposed to tighten it is actually completely broken off.
As described here in post 294, the 300d's tensioner/plate seemed to fit (though differently than the other one), but I determined that it was mounted crooked, and I couldn't get it to work without squealing (and shredding) the belt.
My questions for you start here: Is the L-bolt-style tensioner/plate supposed to be interchangeable with the star-bolt-style one? Am I just doing it wrong, or do I just have a bad one (it doesn't look bent)? Is there another way to upgrade from those apparently-easily-mangled star bolt tensioners/plates?
Thanks.
Mike
