Glow plug numbering help

Ok friday night it was 8F here and I went out to start my car. I had no problem when it was 17F so I was optimistic. I did the following.

1. Turned over the key
2. Waited for light to go out
3. Tried starting for about 10 seconds or so.
4. No dice so I turned off the car and repeated 1-3
5. Still no dice but this time I tried 1-3 and got no light for 2.
6. Figured hell with it and cranked for quite a while. Was not timing but at least 45-60 seconds before it started.

7. At lunchtime I went out to start my car to find the battery was dead. Now while I had cranked quite a bit that morning I was puzzled by this. Took the battery in and charged it and everything seemed fine after that but I am just the slightest bit leery of my glow plug relay now.

Well while I was at work I took a multimeter to the harness and found that two were shot. Numbers 3 and 5. I went and bought a pair of these plugs to replace the bad ones however during my recent move I have lost my multimeter. Can anybody tell me the numbering system for the glow plugs on a 1984 300D turbo? I could wait till Monday and I get back to work but I would rather deal with it now.

EDIT: I do have a block heater but don't really want to have to use it. Having it plugged in all night seems like a waste of electricity.

Front to rear.

#3 is the one in the middle; #5 is the hardest to get to. A flex-head, ratcheting combination wrench will make the job a bit easier.

FYI, it is not recommended to crank the starter more than 30 seconds... of course, in his situation, you kinda had no choice.

Also, you can run the block heater on the timer so that it turns on four hours before you leave or something.

Timer? Don't have one. I should be ok with new glow plugs in though. Im not sure if I should try replacing the other 3 later once I have more than negative cash though.

Haha, I meant to write "a", not "the". If the other glow plugs are still functioning, then I would leave them in if you are experiencing cash flow issues.

You can probably get a Timer for $5 or $10. Try Harbor Freight or Wally World.
The block heater draws 400W, and would be easier on the engine and starter starting a warm engine. Use Synthetic Oil and wait for the GP Relay to time out before trying to start the Engine. The GP light goes out before the Relay Times out.

Pull the glow plug harness from the control unit. The pins are numbered. Hook a test light backwards (ground on test light to positive at battery) and which ever pin does not illuminate is the problem plug. The plug numbering is not the same as the cylinder numbering, so please see the attached image.

This is the flat-rate way to find a bad glowplug...HTH

Layout of 5-pole coupler:

Jack 1 of coupler -
Pencil element glow plug cylinder 1—2.5 black/blue
Jack 2 of coupler =
Pencil element glow plug cylinder 2—2.5 black/purple
Jack 3 of coupler =
Pencil element glow plug cylinder 3—2.5 black/red
Jack 4 of coupler^
Pencil element glow plug cylinder 4—2.5 black/yellow
Jack 5 of coupler =
Pencil element glow plug cylinder 5—2.5 black/green

Birdman I do not have a timer, just plug it in at the vehicle with the cord going inside, and two hours before needing to leave plug it in inside. I find it easier to plug it in when just getting out of a warm vehicle than going out in the weather. Same as a timer as it is on only before you really need it.
