what are some quick fix additives for an 85 300TD aproaching 300K on Veg oil
Anyone got any advice on some additives to help clean out the injectors, or fuel lines, anything I can just add to the tank and let it do its thing?
I have never done any injector maintenance or have never added anything special to the fuel to clean out the system. Any stuff anyone would recommend to do a quick cleaning, even if not as thorough as it would be taking it apart? Ive been driving it for 6 years now with a dual tank greasecar system. Also what kind of oil would one recommend for for the 85 300TD in the midst of a freezing Quebec winter.? |

a couple cans of diesel purge followed by changing out the fuel filters wouldn't hurt. dieselgiant has a good tutorial on how do do this as well as selling the necessary items.
additionally, powerserve in the white jug can be added to the fuel tank now good quality biodiesel in the tank will clean out the entire fuel system, but wait until the weather is warmer for that and have several extra fuel filters & the tools to change them on hand before you proceed. diesel rated synthetic 5w40 oil will aid cold weather starting consider having the injectors disassembled, cleaned & pop tested as a step in the right direction for maintenance. forum member greazzer provides this service for much less $$ than the local diesel shop.

I use Mobil 5-40 Turbo Diesel Truck full synthetic in my 1972 220D and she loves it.
You're going to need to do a real diesel purge, not just add stuff to the tank. Just get a few cans of diesel purge and use that for a good purge. You could also use marvel mystery oil, since the main bulk of that product is naptha, same as diesel purge. I've done MMO purges and the car likes it. If you want to clean out the secondary tank, add some regular diesel and kerosene. Now that it's the dead of winter you're going to be hard pressed to find biodiesel but a few tanks of B30 or greater bio rating, would do wonders for cleaning all that grease garbage out of your system. Fill it up then drive it like you stole it for a while. Make sure to do a valve adjustment regardless of the fuel you run to clean out your grease. After a diesel purge on a greasecar, you're going to have burned out a lot of crap and your valves will all be tighter than they already are. Carry a few extra sets of fuel filters, you'll need them. Good luck. Phil Forrest

Point is, you won't notice a clogged injector usually until it ruins a cylinder and it's too late. With the injectors pulled you can glow the plugs (a dark night is nice) and easily tell how hot each plug is getting and replace any. And you can do a compression test in injector holes for fun. Also it's easy to replace nozzles. You need a vice to put injector in. You don't have to pop test. But it doesn't hurt. I had a pop tester and I did a few sets and every time the new nozzle was within spec and they all tested about the same. When my pop tester broke I just didn't worry and replaced nozzles without testing. They are only like 12.00 a piece for monarch nozzles. My practice is to just replace all nozzles and glow plugs before running grease in my new Benz. But I'm a single tank blender. Good luck. Hope that helps. Congrats on your 6 years of running grease. That is cool

X2 on the DieselGiant DIY, but be aware that it is much cheaper for you to buy the individual items in his kit from auto parts stores yourself -- his stuff is crazy expensive .

Love me some diesel purge. Its like $7.70 a can at my local napa. Made a huge difference on my non turbo wagon. Do a can or two directly from the can, you may not need injectors.

diesel purge will also help clean out the injection pump itself, a good thing to do before you change the injector nozzles

on cost
how much is a 'free' tutorial worth?
I like to spread my my shopping dollars around, when I can, to keep those 'sources' going. While a house in Arizona my offer the best bang-for-the-buck on many items, it is often worthwhile to pay a little more for better quality products, to say nothing about the extensive knowledge-base that can be accessed by simply picking up the phone. Likewise, having a good relationship with the counterperson @ the local dealer can come in handy in a tight spot. With a nod & a wink, small, hard to get items sometimes do not appear on the invoice this way.

Put a small chunk of polymerized vo in a glass jar, pour in some Diesel Purge and let it sit overnight. My result when I did this test approx 7 years ago was it did not do anything to the poly vo. YMMV Again, what kind of issues are you having? If the injectors have never been serviced, that is the first thing I would suggest you do. Take them out (take some pics), have them pop tested, if they pop ok, clean the pintle area of buildup and put the injectors back in. If popped bad, replace the nozzles, get them balanced. Forget about anything in a can, you'll be wasting time and money. 9 years, 200K miles on 3 tank system
