1985 W123 Thermostat Housing Madness???

1985 300TD Crap! Part numbers from pre-85 match 85… but

1985 - The T-stat is for the Climate Control blower shutoff (vertical),
the sensor mounted (horizontally) on the T-stat is for the transmission cold shift delay solenoid (1984 California models and 1985 all models)
In 1985 MB introduced a vacuum transducer (known as the ‘blue saucer’) which is triggered by this sensor?

In other words, pre-85 one inlet has a plug (bolt) in it which is next to (side-by-side) the open sensor inlet. On the '85 the (plugged inlet of the pre '85) is permanently ‘cast’ blocked and the second sensor is lower and down by the bell housing of the section that connects to the thermostat cover… so the '85 inlets are not side by side as in the pre-85s.

1) Am I wrong in my assessment? Please correct me!
2) Will a 82-84 non California work and function properly?

Thanks

To answer your first question, I am not really following. But to answer your second question, no, only if you want your trans to shift properly like an '85 should.

BTW- the '84 Cali does not have this cold shifting function, so no sensor is located in the T-stat housing.

OK... well that sums it up. I just thought I had lost it because folks kept saying if the part number was the same it would be fine. I begged to differ as the descriptions, photos and diagrams I looked at did not match the two '85 thermostat housings in my cars.

I just needed someone sane to confirm it... now there are two of us ...done!

thanks

BTW - I produced bio-d here (N.O., LA) from 2007 - 2010... lotta fun ...lotta work
