Unhappy it's snowing... supposed to get 2"... oh no...

first snow this year. pitiful, but it's falling when it's 20ish out, so it's freezing to the roads, and making it a mess for the ill equipped to drive... and anybody in their way... on my way home, I had to give way to several drivers that were too stupid to know how to drive in this mess. I watched several accidents occur, and just drove around them... argh. I fear for my Mercedes on nights like this... they salted the roads two days ago... I guess the did it again today, but not sure. I'm sure the sand trucks will be out tonight.
the south is just SOOOO ill equipped to deal with any amount of snow, and the drivers treat it like it's nothing, and drive as if the roads are dry, right into oncoming traffic, or a tree, light pole whatever will stop them...
I'm glad I have my GMC truck to drive in... most will just bounce off that truck! and a few more bumps and bruises don't bother me... My TD will happily wait in the driveway until the roads are clear, and the id10t's are no longer a factor.

Supposed to pass thru here overnight. Plans are to stay at the house tomorrow morning and play it by ear as far as being able to go to work. Thankfully, got a fireplace and kero if power goes out. Looking forward to getting back to 50's weather on Thursday.

What ??

Haven't they closed the state yet???

Been there (1980's) in snow, Charlotte NC had over 2000 accidents in four hours.

You need an APC, not a truck or car...

That M2 on the roof would be handy for "communicating" with tailgaters.

I was pleased with how my '83 fared with h-rated Dunlop all seasons on it, when I had to drive it in the snow.

It's the other idiots that worry me.

Glad I'm not in Virginia Beach. Was there last week when they got about 3 inches. Some are forecasting up to a foot this time!
My diesels stay in the driveway if there's any significant snow or salt around.

Happy Motoring, Mark

The problem with southern snow (having grown up and learned to drive in the early 80s in Chicago) is that it is much different than in the north.

Typical snows in the north fall when it is below freezing, and the snow just piles up on the road and does not melt. It gets compacted by driving on it but it is manageable if you know how to respect the laws of physics.

Typical snows in the south start out as freezing rain that puts a coating of ice on the road. Then it snows on top of that. The snow does not compact, it is like putting flour on a granite countertop. It is often impossible to gain traction in those conditions no matter what you are driving, or your skill level.

Add to that the inexperience factor, and it is with good reason things shut down here. I will take a 8-10" typical snow in Chicago, over a 1/4 inch of ice with 2 inches of snow on top here anyday.

Started sleeting around 5 pm
Changed over to ice about 7 pm
We got a very thin coat of ice (< 0.1 inch)
Now it's snowing as of 8:35 pm.

yep, it started around 4:00 and was nasty by 5:30, it's still coming down heavy as I type... I drove home around 5:30 and saw and dealt with several accidents to avoid...
there is around 1" on top of the ice sheets on the roads right now... and as cold as it is, it'll be FUN in the morning.
schools got early dismissal, and shut down around 12:00 today... no school tomorrow, so not sure what I'll be doing if K needs to work... of course, if any of my customers have heat out issues tonight, or tomorrow... I'll be out in it.
wish me luck!

I think that Revell model is the one that Indiana Jones hangs onto the front of (and busts off the Star) then uses his whip to rough-ride his way to the back and defeat the bad guys driving it.
