Good job, windshields with these gaskets are a total PITA. I restored a 1974 VW Karmann Ghia some years ago, when it came to the windshield a friend and I fought with it for 2 days. Then I called a shop, and they came out, and fought with it for 4 hours, before resorting to cutting some tabs as well, then it went it. Basically, for the Ghia there was no OEM rubber for it anymore, and the knock off stuff, clearly was not the same. I understand the non OEM seals are very difficult, which one were you using?

I am sure the one I am using is a cheap Chinese one, I had safelite install a windshield in the car some time ago, I can't remember why....I think the original windshield had a crack in it. The safelite guy did an excellent job putting it in, and it didn't take him long. I think why I had issues was because the chrome got tweaked by the windshield being broke...

Sounds like there were 2. You and a buddy, removing the windshield at the yard?

I have to ask how heavy it is and how complicated it is to remove and handle.
Do you use glass suction handles?

I often see good glass go untouched because I imagine its a bear to carry.

Anyway, good for you ! Looks good.

Its simple to remove the windshield and carry it, I used a utility knife to cut the gasket off around the channel inside of the car....then you can just push it out and lift it out of the car. I kept the gasket and chrome on them when I removed them to add strength and protection. I have a glass suction cup but I don't trust carrying it with that...so I just grabbed it from the top and bottom and carried it in the middle its maybe 30lbs, its more awkward then heavy.

Sunroof assembly time...talk about a total PITA

So the main thing I should point out, I found out you don't have to remove the pan to get the sun roof out.

I had to remove my pan as there was rust and now is the best time to fix it, plus it was easier to clean the tracks.

So I got everything finished and ready to install and for the life of me I couldn't find the bolts...look, screamed, tore apart the car and couldn't find one of the 12 bolts...then I started picking up stuff...doing some odds and ends...then sat inside and started looking for them again...and there they are...right on the floor board..

Then we got it all put back up and found out that the weather stripping I used was just the right size for the back but to thick for the front...so had to remove it again and install thinner stripping..

Its all back up now....minus a few bolts...

And yes it does leak but since the drains are clear...its not an issue....and since I now know how simple it is to remove the roof....I will do the seals at a later date.

Photos!

My custom made bucket seats

I'm most impressed by your accomplishment with that car. Especially with your ability to get that windshield back in. I've seldom seen one done as well as that even by folks with a lot of experience. I like your bucket seats too.

You are not the first to have driven around in a W123 with "non standard" seats

Probably not as comfortable as your setup but they served the purpose while necessary...

Well remember the invisibility cloak on harry potter? Its my own version for my car, so I can sneak up on members and slowly steal their parts

It was a canopy cover....we have hurricane gust winds around here so when I had no glass in it, I have it covered with about six cinder blocks to attempt to keep the cover on and sand out of the car....yes rains not a biggie around here....its the dust storms....can deposit a pound of sand in the car in a few hours.

Yesterday

Well as my luck goes, some stuff has changed....

I let my buddy do some driving in my 78, he is still new to driving, so he needs experience....so I let him drive, and taught him about the kick down switch and how to push the peddle to the floor...to kick it down a gear to take off faster....I am guessing he was holding the peddle down and in gear to long...

I jumped in the car, and noticed it wasn't shifting right, then noticed the speedo was jumping and going to zero...the car would just randomly downshift, and not want to up shift...appears the governor is toast....

So now...this guy is becoming my daily driver again...

Today, I did all of this from about 2-7

rehooked up the vacuum lines for the locks.
removed the skin and old horse hair from the rear back seat cushion
switch the passenger springs to the drivers
add new butt pad to passenger
cleaned and lubed tracks
installed battery
rear view mirror
battery
muffler hangers
seat belts
door cards
check strap
door seal plates

The car is running super, able to reach 80mph in no time, I forgot how strong and powerful this car was. I still have a rough idle...probably do to the mounts, will idle it up a hair..

Need to get a new u bolt...some idiot decide to remove the nuts, some how they screwed up my alignment...he pulls to the right and I have to hold the steering wheel at an angle....getting a rubbing noise on the drivers side...seems odd...need to check the fluid in the trans and rear...

He is extremely and I mean extremely noise because I removed all the insulation, tomorrow I will get the old floor mats out and put them back, there's a roll of carpet padding here...going to lay that under it....see how that improves the sound....need a gasket for rear window...but need to install the headliner first...so I will just duct tape the rear windshield in...in an attempt to keep water out....he may be all tore about but in a way....its really fun to drive in...totally mad max

Will get some photos taken tomorrow..

Today, I spent another good portion of time on the brown bomber...

I first went to the hardware store and got all the missing screws for the head lights and the nuts for the U bolt...

Came home and grabbed some carpet insulation...

Removed the back seat again, put the insulation pad on, and one on the rear deck. Then I grabbed the carpet insulation and started my temp insulation project....I cut pieces for the rear and then put the floor mats on top, and then did the same in the front.

Cleaned the hazard switch, and power mirror switch, wired up my head light switch and instrument cluster, replaced turn signal bulbs(yes all bulbs were also stolen)

So here's my custom temporary interior

Its amazing how much quieter the cabin is, just with this little bit of work.

My custom rear windshield seal...
