Around here I've seen diesel as high as $4.19 lately. All of my vehicles on the road presently are diesel. I get good enough overall MPG that it doesn't matter much...TDI gets around 33 in the city, 43ish highway... my 300SD gets about 23 city, 28 highway....and my awesome 190d frankencar gets about 31 city and 37 highway.

Any gas car I have (or would have) needs premium fuel, so the cost difference is less significant. My 420 only gets about 15-17mpg with my driving style So it still costs more to drive it....but its a warm weather only car.

We drive barely 200 miles a week combined....at a combined 27 mpg or so....barely 7 gallons of fuel a week.

Ok, local prices are:

$1.228 CAD per litre for gas
$1.429 CAD per litre for diesel.

To convert to gallons and USD, that's:

$4.19 USD per gallon for gas,
$4.88 USD per gallon for diesel.

This is also true, plus in my case I really wanted an MB diesel because i wanted one not to save on fuel so it is ok. Diesel fuel cost more to produce than gasoline so I guess we have to pay to play. I plan to keep this car for a long time so Bring it on BIG BROTHER.

Not at all. Think of the cost per BTU, not per gallon. It's the BTU's that do the work, not the gallons. If you've ever been a victim of the E85 scam where you're paying 15% less per gallon for 30% fewer BTU's, you'll learn that lesson very quickly.

Then go run your car on coal since you're getting so many more BTUs for your dollar.

I suspect his point was that is you consider $/btu, then we need to consider miles per btu. In other words, if you credit diesel for having more energy per gallon, then you need to reduce your fuel economy by the same factor.

Edit... tjts1 responded before I hit submit. I guess my suspicions were wrong.

Lol. The 617 is a pretty robust and versatile engine..I don think its THAT versatile though.

I'm thinking the lift pump might have some issue trying to suck a lump of coal through the fuel line.

My recollection may be incorrect, but I thought Rudolf Diesel was working on a coal dust burning version of his engine towards the end of his life.
