RUG (Regular unlead) - Diesel price Differential

Is it my imagination, or is the RUG diesel differential about as wide as it's been in a long time? In Providence, RUG is 3.29, diesel is 4.09...over 25% more expensive. My MB diesels are ALMOST as expensive to operate as our Honda Odyssey. Sigh.....

LOL. I wish ours was that cheap. We're not that far away geographically speaking either...

$3.25 regular
$4.09 diesel.

I saw 4.25 diesel on my way to work, but that station always gouges.

I got diesel for $3.86 yesterday.

When I worked in Long Island there were two diesel stations across a street (rt. 110) from each other; I can't remember the exact difference in price but it was over 75 cents a gallon! Totally blew my mind

use the GASBUDDY app

It saved me a couple of hundred bucks over the span of a year. My average cost for diesel fuel in LA in 2013 was $3.61 ($2.97 - $3.87). My first fill up in 2014 was $3.60/gal. I'm usually buying diesel about 10% below the average price in LA. CARB RUG is more expensive than the rest of the country while CARB diesel fuel (53+ cetane) is about the same price as the same of the rest of the country. Overall my fuel cost per mile is far below what it would be with the equivalent gasoline fueled car.

Also try and take advantage of any club card you might have. Safeway/Vons gives me 20 cents/gal off at Chevron stations and up to $1/gal off at Safeway/Vons stations for a purchase of 25gal. Ralphs and other stores do the same thing.

I saw $3.25 RUG /$4.09 for diesel. My guess is that the cold weather equals more HHO, so demand for diesel is up. I know lots of folks around here run off-road diesel in their trucks anyway, can't really blame them.

that'd jump my fuel economy up a notch or so wouln't it?

Fwiw, I have heard that the differential is greater because overseas demand has shifted the supply-demand curve: they get more for it due to more customers competing for a set amount of fuel...

If you're in the US (outside of CA and a few other states) you're getting minimum 48 cetane ULSD since 2006 as mandated by federal law. It can drop as low as 45 for some small refineries but the vast majority of fuel is now min 48 cetane.

Don't forget to add about 13% to the cost of RUG to equal the energy equivalent of diesel fuel. If the price difference is less than that, diesel is actually cheaper.

I just went to fill up for the second time since buying the car a month ago and my hair stood up on end when I saw the price of diesel
I don't know if it is just my luck but when I bought my 06 ram and for the 6 years I had it diesel and gas price difference was always between a dollar and 75 cents. When I sold it and bought the Tundra and they dropped significantly shortly after. They started getting closer and closer to the point where sometimes it was about 20 cents difference. Now I buy another diesel and the friggin prices skyrocket again? WTF? Not cool!
Still love my diesel tho
