Turbo is shot... rebuild?

Hey all,

The turbo in my 81 300SD (185,000 miles, sat for 7 years) burns a ton of oil. There's a good amount of shaft play and the blades are pretty chopped up (I'm hoping this is the cause of my blow by).

Anyway, I have been thinking about getting the turbo rebuilt. Would it be okay to just get the INTAKE side of the turbo rebuilt? It would be nice not to have to mess with removing the exhaust manifold, replacing all gaskets, etc. I found what seems to be a pretty reputable company out of Ohio. They said they could rebuild just the intake side for $350, and will do the entire turbo for $425.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Pretty Much answers my question. Could I just get a new cartridge and call it a day, or is there more to it than that?

Main wear items:
Rear bearing
Rear seal
Font bearing
Front seal

An unbalanced assembly kills the bearings & seals quickly.

I've had good luck with $120 junkyard and eb*y turbos so far

If the Turbine or Compressor Wheel Fins have lost any Metal or rubbed against either Housing they would need to be cleaned and rebalanced.

If the Compressor or Turbine Wheel are messed up enough you would need new ones and the Turbine Wheel cost usually costs to the extent a rebuilt Turbo or rebuilt Center section/Cartridge Assembly is cheaper.

If the Ring Groove on the Turbine Wheel has a step worn into it where the Seal goes there is a really good possibility it would leak Oil even with a new Seal.

After that you are looking at the Shaft Journals for Wear and the Bearing Housing Bearing Bores.
No one has posted wear limits for those.

If the wheels are damaged, just get a good unit from the junk yard.

Rebuilding these turbos is not difficult but if you have CRH or wheel damage, it can be more expensive than it is worth. If you can't get away with just bearings and seals, source a new core.

...what he said ^^

Turbos are generally pretty reliable, so you'd have a great chance of finding a good one. Make sure you check end play and inspect the turbines, especially the hot section.

Tim's Turbos in Virginia did a nice job on mine. He has a website so you can Google him. He also fitted a T4 on the compressor side but he also does stock rebuilds. As mine was a custom job I have no clue what he changes for a stock rebuild but I thought he was pretty reasonable on mine.
