How are the trunk emblems attached?

I had some stuff in the front of my garage, so I parked a bit too far away from it, and when I closed the garaged door it clipped the chrome 300d 2.5 emblem on back of the trunk lid.

The emblem didn't break in 1/2, but the left side is still firmly attached, while the right half is no longer stuck onto the car. The left 1/2 is what's keeping the emblem together, with the right 1/2 dangling. I think originally, the emblem might have one puncture hole through the trunk lid on the left half, and the rest has some sticky stuff stick to the car.

How can I repair this? I think the only thing I can do to properly fix this, is to take the entire emblem off, repair it, then properly put it back on the car.

I can't bend the right 1/2 back much, or it will break off from the left half.

Thanks.

This one I found doesn't look like it has the posts you are referring to. I know that my 240D has posts and some grommets to keep it in place.

When I pulled the trunk emblems from my '85 300SD they were both stuck on with the German equivalent of trim tape (super strong double stick) and some alignment pins. They were a stinker to remove. Mine bent a bit and I was able to pretty much straighten it w/o breakage. I suggest that you get a little trim tape (try your favorite body shop for a small quantity thereof) and straighten the emblem then stick it back on. It might not be perfect but should look OK.

The Tri-Star has a center stud and nut but I don't recall what keeps it from turning. I plan to install the Tri-Star in the center of the S-10 tailgate and I'll use trim tape in a couple of spots to anchor it.

The trunk emblems are just held on with some kind of sticky tape after 1985, there is no pin that holds them on. once you remove the emblem, you need to use something to re-stick it back on.

Dan, if you look at the threaded stud on the back of the star, it isn`t round, it has 2 flat sides, and the hole in the trunk is the same to keep it from turning.

The Emblems and the Star are metal up to 85, then 86 on, MB cheapened them and went to plastic. the star is held on with 3 plastic pins.

Thanks for that tip, Charlie. I'll see if I can make an appropriately shaped hole in the tailgate. If not it's sticky tape time. My plan is to make the Tri-Star the only external sign of the truck's Benzness. The exhaust out the right fender might give away its Dieselness.

My 87 came to me with no emblems... just dirt lines where they had been... there are 3 holes in the deck lid for the 190D emblem, the 2.5Turbo emblem has no holes.
MB replacements came with sticky tape on the back, and no pins... but they are metal badges.

I used this double-sided tape.

Clean off the back of your emblems.

Apply the tape and trim around the lettering.

Remove final backing and apply. Its that simple. My emblems have held with any signs of coming loose.

Even Proton approves.

3M 4941 VHB Double-Sided Acrylic Foam Tape, 45 mil, 0.5" x 5 Yards (Dark Grey): Adhesive Tapes: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

It's called 3M VHB. There is s building in Dubai that has its windows held on with the stuff. The company I work for uses it to hold the lenses on digital micrometers etc. STRONG stuff.
