also, be warned... on the side of the transmission bellhousing between the TC and the engine, there is a plastic plug that will make pulling the trans off the TC very difficult. remove it before attempting to pull off the trans.

Whunter. Question. I got the transmission removed from the engine and sure enough the TC stayed attached to the engine. Now, in replacing the transmission seal, is it just a matter of pulling it out and pressing in a new one?

Here is the eng/trans adaptor ring from the trunk. It was easy to find the tach sensor wire and pickup because it was attached to it.
Which side faces the engine? Where is the top of the ring? Its hard to peer down on the back of the engine to see the installed ring. I'm looking for the hole to install the tach sensor, if its there. Or to see if I can drill one without removing the trans and swapping the rings. And a final question, what other options are possible for the tach sensor, so I can avoid removing the trans?

The top pic faces out toward the trans. If you think about it, otherwise the starter hole is on the wrong side.
If you already have the trans out it's no big deal to change this piece. Just that inner row of 4 bolts and you're there. Assuming that your tach wiring is still in place, this is the time to do this job. BTW - I had a heck of a time getting mine clean. Evidently M-B uses some special kind of crud on these that's not removable by anyone except Superman. I finally took mine to the machine shop and they used their magic parts cleaner cabinet. Dan |

keep in mind, you MUST put the TC on the transmission before you put the transmission back on the engine... there is NO WAY TO GET ALL PARTS OF THE TC ALIGNED othewise... if you attempt to put the trans back to the TC with it attached to the motor, you will have a junk trans in less than 5 miles of driving... if the car ever moves that is.

I can see that there are like "forks" on the back end of the TC that fit into a couple of slots in the transmission. I slowly turned it about a turn and it definiately slid into those slots but I never heard 3 clunks. Thats my question, are there definitely 3 clunks that must be heard? I turned and turned and didn't hear any more clunks. Am I supposed to turn the TC many many times to hear those 3 clunks? |

you have to turn it both directions while lifting and wiggling the TC, I always feel all three clunks, as it's almost never dropped right in without it.
