At this point my concern is to assure that the chain didn't slip a tooth when everything was loose to lower the crank so ballpark is close enough for this. I'm hoping to get the truck over to Greezer (or Greezer here to the truck) to put his AVL light on it and fine tune the timing before it gets to the track. We had one of those lights at EPA and it would have been great - except the Diesels we had on the dyno had no marks or timing specs. I think M-B was among the first to do that.

What we used the light for at work - we would get our contract guy (a Diesel fuel system expert) to come in and set up the engines to spec then we'd make up a pointer and a mark. From there on we could check timing quickly.

Bear in mind that this A-B timing light method is only aligning the position of the cam in the IP with a position of the crank. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the true point of delivery of fuel to the injectors. I can imagine that on a worn IP - or one that needs adjustment - this might not give the smoothest idle. If you have the time it might be worthwhile fiddling about with the position to see how it behaves. I've read a few reports here where people say that they have done the drip test or the A-B timing light check but a little tweak one way or the other made all the difference.

Idle? What is this thing called "idle"? As long as it doesn't stall on the line, idle is of no concern to me! WOR (that's Wide Open Rack) - now THAT'S a concern!

I imagine I'll have to fiddle with pump timing but I need a starting point. My pump-to- block relationship has been marked by some PO (or do they come from the factory that way?) so I can get back to the starting point pretty easily.

I'm also curious to see if it wants different timing after the intercooler is in place. Anyone's guess at this point.

... there is no way for the chain to slip a tooth from the IP timing device, unless you remove the chain or the device from the motor.

I'm hoping to see a lot more wide open racks in the future.

I've had non-Diesel Knuckleheads say WOT (or say the whole deal - Wide Open Throttle) and it's funny to watch them when you say that it has no throttle. If I detect genuine interest I'll explain. Otherwise I just leave 'em confused. Happened a lot when I had the Dodge at the Ohio Mile - mostly among the spectators as most of the racers are pretty sharp.

But this brings up a question: The '84 240D that I took the 4 speed from had what appeared to be a throttle plate above the intake inlet (non-turbo, of course). Any idea of it's function? From some rough experiments we did on the dyno at EPA I know that throttling a Diesel on decel results in lower particulate emissions (PM). Was this M-B's intent or were they after engine braking on decel - or ???

And Stretch - get yer mind outta the gutter. Are you spending too much time in "those shops" in Amsterdam?

Well I don't know what you mean. The tulips will be out in a few weeks - could you mean that?

As for the '84 it sounds like someone put an OM615 in there (or it wasn't an '84) => see chapter 07-010 in the non turbo section of the FSM for a description of a throttle valve / venturi intake system on a diesel...

No clue on the actual installed engine. The trans seemed to be the right thing (aluminum case 4 speed) and that's what I was after so the car did it's duty for my purposes.

Tulips - yeah, that's it!
