Manual Transmission Bushing Question

My 240 manual tranny has a bad case of the "slops." There is no sense of location within the "H" and it is very difficult to differentiate between gears (especially first and reverse) as no shifter lift or other special movement is required for reverse anymore. No problem as long as you don't attempt to shift to first while still moving but my wife has very difficult time driving the car and I would like to replace the bushings. I have replaced shifter linkage bushings on a W124 Automatic but haven't even looked at the 240 to see what is involved. Any help with procedure, degree of difficulty/involvement, parts needed, tricks or other relevant information would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Nothing directly on point found in search but any prior post references would also be appreciated.

Its a pretty easy job. Once you have a look under the car and see how the linkages are set up, you'll see how the bushings are set up. I remember on my old '81 240D 4spd, I went to the dealer andasked for the bushings and they sold me the aluminum "housings" that the bushings were installed in. I dont think the bushings themselves are sold separately. The Haynes manual has an excellent diagram and procedure on how to replace and adjust the bushings. Good luck.

"you can make a small press from a bolt, nut and a couple oversized washers. Put some vaseline on the bushing and sandwitch it between the linkage arm and the washers and tighten the nut"

I had this "on file" never needed to try it but it should work.

Sounds like you may also have problems within the shifter its self. There are some bushings that support the shift lever which can fail/wear and cause sloppy shifting. The 4-spped shifter that came out of my car when I installed the 5-speed had worn like this.

The shifter linkage bushings at the tranny end are usually the ones that go south. I dont have a part # but Phil here should have them if thats the ones your needing.

Ya, old tugboats and old diesel MBs are a good combo

FWIW, this was an easy and very worthwhile repair from what I remember. Still on the same ones today and it still feels good.

I did the bushings on my 240D a few years ago. It was a very easy and cheap job. I've got a couple of old posts on the repair. If anyone wants it, contact me offlist at len@sokoloff.com. There are also allen bolts where the linkages connect to the transmission - make sure they are snug too while you're under there.

there is a large plastic bush in the shifter that wears out and causes slopping shifting.

to change it the shifter assembly must come out, i believe. once out it is pretty easy to change i think. i have not done it personally but my indie has done it for me a couple of times.
