Turn signal stalk

My lights on low beam would not come on unless you wiggled the stalk. So I got electrical spray and sprayed in the switch under the rubber cover. It worked for a day now the only lights I have are high beams . Does anyone have a step by step procedure for removing the turn signal stalk. I plan on taking the one off the wagon and put it on the 84 300CD. There shouldn't be a issue between 85 wagon and 84 300CD right?

I believe they are the same between the two 123s you mention.

The replacement can be made without removing the steering wheel. Be sure the wheel is centered and unlocked before you start.

Remove the lower dash cover and unplug the main connector and the cruise control connector (you will see the cables going up the column housing). Remove the rubber cover over the stalk and disconnect the 2 horn wires from the screw terminals.

Now the switch assembly can be unscrewed from the side of the column and pulled out to the left. Thread the cables up and out the passage inside the column.

Note the cruise control switch is a daughter assembly to the main switch. So if your donor switch does not have a cruise lever you can swap your existing one over.

Slide the new cables down the passage and set the switch assembly in position. Hook up the horn wires. Test the operation of the signal cancel mechanism and verify it disengages the turn signal after rotating the wheel back and forth.

When you pull the connector up thru the column, orient it so the pins face the inside, that will give you an extra 1/16", which helps. The hardest part for me is getting the two bare wires (brn & blk I recall) on the new switch, without losing the little square washers. Had M-B made those wires 1" longer, it would be easy.

The switch in my 84 needs wiggling to go into high-beam. I recall spraying it with contact cleaner a few years ago before my son took it away, but might have swapped stalks. My hi-beam dash light doesn't light, even though I checked it works when I had the cluster out a few weeks ago (applied 12 V to pin), so that might come from the stalk too.

It is not necessary to back the horn screws all the way out. The square washer is a pressure plate to hold the stripped and tinned end of the wire from the horn slip ring.

Just loosen the screw a couple turns and the wire will slide out from under the plate.

When installing the wire just slip the stripped end under the plate (either to the left or the right of center) and tighten the
screw. You may have to back off another turn or so to give enough room to insert the wire, but you don't have to remove it.

Sorry I left off that detail. That type of terminal is on many of the electrical devices I work with every day and I forgot not everyone is a control freak like me.
