Change both fuel filters, the engine is most likely starving for fuel. Also change your air filter.

THIS. Start with fuel and air filters. If that doesn't help then you can start looking at other things like the ALDA and the various things that affect the turbo output.

The car is old. Like any older car It usually pays to go over everything. Then you have a new baseline.

Timing chain items should be carefully checked. Not because they are the cause of your current issue. But if any form of extreme wear is there and the chain lets go it will probably kill the engine.

As with any type fuelling issue on diesels you almost always start by changing the fuel filters. Not that they will be the problem. You just have to absolutely be sure they are not the problem.

Do the other stuff to the Fuel System mentioned previously.

Check the Fuel Tank Screen

The Fuel Supply/Lift Pumps don't seem to last as long like the 30 Plus year ones on the 617 type Engines.
Same with the Fuel Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve.

Are the Throttle Linkages and Cables moving the Throttle Arm as the are suppsed to. I have a different Engine but My Throttle linkages were extremely sloppy and I had poor exceleration off the line. When the Car got going and after that it was normal.

do a valve adjustment also. after all the things listed, then maybe maybe install a manual boost controller but don't go over 11psi boost and don't floor it for more than about 20 seconds.

A '91 should have hydraulic lifters. No adjustments needed.

Is this an issue that happened suddenly?

Did this begin shortly after filling your fuel tank?

When is the last time the fuel/air filters where changed?

Are there any leaks in the fuel system?

Has this car run vegetable or used engine oil?

Have you noted:
* A longer delay for the engine to shutdown?
* A change in transmission shifting?
* A change in climate control function?
* A hiss or suck when the fuel fill cap is opened?

.

these may help

Your car is IMO more sensitive to vacuum leaks due to air intake flap/transducer system.

W124 93 300D 2.5 Boost Problems (I too am stumped!)

disabled EGR, now what?

Vacuum leaks usually have a direct negative impact on transmission shift performance.
