help!! 1985 300d trunk stuck w/ groceries in it Charlie where are you?

Hi all,

As the header reads...my trunk is stuck in the locked position. I use it frequently and it has never stuck before. It is a little sticky due to the seal, but other than that it has never refused to open.
I tried unlocking the doors and restarting the engine t build vacum, no joy.
Any pointers on how to get this open would be great! I really dont want to lose
$100 worth of groceries...
Charlie if you read this I cant find your phone #

thanks all
Teresa

You've got a PM. I'm at work but I can talk.

By the way, what model/year? Is the trunk lock working? Have you tried the key?

Teresa, you have an 85 right? if so lift up the rear seat cushion, and there should be a clear plastic covered cable with a loop on the end. Pull it and the trunk should pop open.

Just talked to her.

Key rotates normally in the trunk lock. First and second attempt depressing the key "button" had normal engagement, subsequent attempts have no feel of engagement. Trunk will not open, has tried reclosing/reengaging lock.

I suggested she try looking in the first aid kit tray to see if a grocery bag was in the lock. Then with a long pole trying to open the trunk that way.

If all else fails she said she had an extra set of taillights and could bust one out to reach the internal side of the lock.

Hope she gets it open!

Crap! I didn't know such a thing existed!

She mentioned that and I told her that it must be on another model. My bad.

I didn`t know either till I saw one in PNP, and think it is only the 85`s that have it. Though Iam not sure if my 85 has it. Need to check. should know by now, have had the car since 97.

Did you call her back? She said she has limited internet access.

EDIT: I called her back. She got it, said she'd be posting soon.

Thank you!

OK, got it open. But I decided to try and leave it in the unlocked position and
tried to further investigate. It seems there is some type of small leaver loose on the backside of the locking mechanism and feels like it is going to fall off.
So now in the unlock position pressing the button the lock will not move. ??
It is open, but I dont want to close it till I can make sure it will engage again..
So what now, I need to take it apart?

I ran my trunk for the entirety of it's life with no locking mechanism. A bungee cord inside the lid kept it mostly shut.

With some fiddling and wd-40 and a lot of back and forth, it is opening.
Still has loose piece. The lock will not stay in the open position in horizontal lock position. It will open one time, then go back to locked and will not open w/o the key. Any ideas?

Conclusion....it is opening, so partial mech failure and partial operator errorr!
Lubed the locking mechanism and the seals and it is opening much easier.
So I hope it will hold up until next fix is needed.
79mercy willfigure it out!
Glad I didnt have to break my tail lights out, but at least the other set of lights are euros!

Thank you all so much.....You saved me a mechanic call and my groceries!

.I love this place!

FWIW I can only open the trunk on my 240D with the key. All of the other locks are functioning normally. This has been an issue for years now but I have never fooled with it.

I have never been a fan of the vacuum operated door locks, so I always use the KEY. What could be more simple AND reliable?

There has been some previous discussion about the pull release cable for the trunk lock. Believe that it has been fairly well established that it is usually (always, but only?) present when the '85 300D's have the factory alarm system. We have an '85 parts car and it has both features, while the '83 has neither. Will likely try to retro-fit the cable from the '85 into the '83 for safety's sake.

Glad that things are working better around the trunk lock.

My 83 300D's trunk would not open one day. Had to go through the first aid kit route. Once out we saw that a small screw got wedged between that lever, and the mechanism "basin" (for lack of a better term). This prevented the lever from moving and unlocking the mechanism using the key to release the lever.

The '85 had the pull cord, different from earlier years, most likely due to the alarm system. Maybe some 84's had them too.
