Servicing the instrument cluster.... upgrades? 1984 300D

so i have seen some pictures where people have added a red light to monitor oil pressure or repaint the needles on their instrument clusters. I want to try to do everything at once if i can so here is what i need/want to do

1. replace speedo cable, just started intermittently hopping at low speeds.
2. repair clock with new caps
3. fix odometer
4. add the red light for the low oil pressure
5. paint the needles
6. replace the lights with LED if possible(good tip there)
7. rheostat
8. make sure cluster is well grounded

Am i missing anything? anything else i should check or do after i have pulled the cluster? are there more caps in there that i should plan on ordering to have on hand?

going to keep updating with other ideas or things if it will let me.

You can add an ambient temp display. The procedure is somewhere in the forum.

you could find a w123 gasser with the "economy" gauge and convert it to a boost gauge. I like mine, it's fun to look at here's a picture. ignore the awful led light and my unplugged outside temp display. that was a mock up picture...

are those wires going to the little cutouts where the gauge lights are? I actually would like a boost gauge does it jump around a lot or pretty smooth?

wouldn't backlit gauges be nice

I am confused.

Is this a 300D or a wagon = 300TD ???

yes, they were. it was an old cluster with burnt light tunnels that i thought i could go LED on. even with the dimmer connected and turned all the way down, it was blinding and quite uneven light output. the boost gauge is very smooth and works great. Of course, you wont really know the psi im guessing it comes off the first peg around 4psi and mine sits a bit into the red floored on the highway. if my wastegate were to fail, i would know too

here's a vid of the gauge in action I was running at about 14-15 psi of boost at the time...

yep one of the reasons i wanted to add a boost gauge, on a 200k car, or however many it has because the odometer doesn't work, i want to know what's going on under the hood.

Exactly! I think it's as good as you're going to get unless you want to hack a real boost gauge in somewhere but this is a great OEM look

Not sure how the waste gate on these things are actually controlled yet but i did clean out the banjo bolt on the manifold that runs to the control on the firewall i think that is when i started noticing it chirp the tires when it shifts like yours. Most of the time now i have a trunk full of stuff so it has helped to quite them down a bit LOL

That line is going to your switchover valve, then your ALDA on your injection pump. It controls your "off the line fuel amount when floored. These wastegates have often lost some spring tension and can be adjusted but is kinda a PITA. no need to have above 14psi max for a stock injection pump.
