Do W126 seats fit into W123? Drivers, in particular.

Swap base? I don't think you need to do that?

Swap a base

The entire seat bolts to the floor of the car.

The bottom part of the seat that contains the rails where the seat moves back and forth, and up and down, is called the base. It can be unbolted (difficult but do-able) from the "seat" part, that is the seatcovers/cushions and the metal frame+springbox in which they sit.

The w126 seat assembly can therefore be bolted to the w123 base. Why? Many more w126s came with leather, than did w123s (quite rare). Some people find any w126 seat more comfy than w123 ones, particularly early production w123 ones. The w126 rear seat also fits, so I am told (have not done any of this myself).

Yes, Jooseppi, people have installed entire w126 seats into w123s, but it is not easy due to issues of wiring up the power seats then either modifying the doors to accept the power seat controls or making some other sort of box to mount the controls into.

Generally much easier to just keep the w123 bases.

Oh yeah, wiring. Duh. I'm swapping W123s into my W126, so I'm not having to deal with that .

MY take on the "Base" being the "Spring Box". The bottom seat frame with the springs that the seat Tracks bolt onto.

If the W126 Seat Tracks with the electric motors is replaced with the seat tracks from the W123 it will bolt right in. Then the only electric will be the seat back, Couldn`t a simple Rocker Switch be used?

If you wanted the W126 electrics for the forward/back/elevation, then it would be a bit more complicated to wire that all up with the W126 door switch.

I have installed the Spring Box in two w123`s. Use the pass side for the Drivers seat. If the W126 seat back frame is like the W123 frame, there is a hole for the Arm Rest to swap in.

Yes, the w126 seat back frame has a hole like the w123 seat back frame. A passenger w126 seat back can be used on a driver's w126 seat. I already have a grey passenger w126 seat back (very good condition) and will be doing this to my 1991 350SDL driver's seat that has this:

Charlie was kind enough to clarify, um, correct what I wrote, without asking where I keep my head when I am not using it .

It would be correct to call the bottom part of the seat -- cushion, springbox, metal frame -- the "base". The part below is the rails.

I have a bad habit of calling the base the "seat bottom" and the rails the "base".
