Question 603 engine-what did I really get?

Well, think I got lied to-again. was going to go to a used engine from a 93 140 body. They sent an engine they said was out of a 93. Looks like the engine from my 91. Cly head #603 016 17 01, inj pump ends RS178, block 603 011 21 01. Thought the newer engines had 19-22 heads. Somebody out there tell me what I got before I yell at them. The engine has been bench tested and passed and has a one year full warranty. Maybe I should keep it, supposed to have only 65K on it. I think it was out of a wreck because the oil pan is welded. This is getting to be a real pain but I don't have the $$$ for a rebuild.

Newer heads did not come out until after the production run I don't think.

Yes, I believe #17 heads were around until 1995 when production ended, the later heads came out afterwards.

You can tell if the engine is from a W126 or W140 by the exhaust manifold and turbo... the W140's manifold doesn't have the trap ox bypass pipe and the turbo has a vacuum wastegate.

I don't find the block part number you listed in the parts catalog.

trap ox bypass pipe? The engine did not come with the turbo so can't tell there. Where and what is the trap ox bypass pipe?

It's the part of the exhaust manifold that goes from the rear of the engine to the front where the turbo is... leftovers from the 86 & 87 603s. The W140 exhaust manifold is a much nicer affair where all the outlets collect at the turbo.

Bypass hose routing is different also between a W126 and W140. One sneaks around the rear of the intake, the other comes through the intake area closer to the IP.

Agreed. I dont have one. Basically, one heater hose port routes to the front of the oil filter housing (W140), and one routes to the rear (W126).

Also, the filter housing on the W140 has the center stud on the cap of the housing (like the W124). W126 has no stud.

I have one 3.0L OM603 if you end up needing to source one after all is said and done. I'm getting out of the MB collecting business. I have two 3.0L engines left, and one is ready to go back into my W140, then I'll be selling that car. Closing on a second house a couple hours closer to work, and really not wanting carry my junk to a new place and have a repeat of my life here.

Checked the block number against the block on the 91 I pulled out. Same # 603 011 2101. Heater hose routing like 126 along with 2 nut oil filter cover. Lied to again. I was told the engine only had 40-50K on it. Tomorrow I will pull the valve cover and check for timing chain wear. We will see then appox. miles. I hate salvage yards. If the chain is alright will probably keep the engine, I got 270k plus on the old one. I will, however, call those folks at yourenginestore and give them a piece of my mind.

Ask for VIN that the engine came from, get datacard from EPC, compare engine serial number to datacard....

If they are guilty, please do post the info of the offending sellers so the rest of us know...
