Git It Runnin Right 1981 W126 300SD

Workin with a 1981 W126 300SD

Original motor ran low on oil and block was no good.
Found a good lower mileage donor motor (83 300SD) with stuck exhaust ports in the head.
My mechanic tore the whole donor motor down, replaced all the seals and swapped the stock head onto it.
He did the drip method for the IP timing.

Him and I parted ways and I'm stuck figuring out how to finish the project (long story).

Current issues it's experiencing:
-hard starting when cold. not horrible, but worse than it should be. needs a fair amount of throttle to get going.
-excessive dark grey smoke. lots on a cold start. color lightens as it warms up. some smoke at full throttle when warm.
-lots of power! maybe 15% more than normal?
-the turbo kicks in too early (1200rpm?)

The mechanic said he wanted to redo the timing but needed a dynamic timing light and we hadn't been able to find one.
Sent him a link the the A/B timing light: http://www.samstagsales.com/images/mbabbox4.jpg
(can't find the other link I had for someone else who sells them, do you have it??)
But that's a static timing light and he said it wouldn't work.
I'm not familiar with the difference and why having a dynamic light would be so important.

The timing chain stretch was only measured by crank degree and not with a dial indicator so we're going to go back and check that.
Also going to adjust the rack damper bolt as I think it may be too fuel rich currently.
Would like to adjust the turbo to kick in later, where is that adjustment?
What should I do about the timing?
What else should we look at?
