Oil cooler lines half done now nothing to drive  1984 300D TD

So i decided to tackle the oil cooler lines today. I pulled the oil cooler free and cut the rubber hoses, i worked on the cooler connections first and it was really easy to cut the ferrules off with the dremel and the little cutting wheels. It's pretty easy cut one side then the other and just pry a little to get them off.

Problems started putting it back together, I ordered braided stainless line off ebay as soon as it got here and i stuck myself with the lines a few times i knew i needed ends too and i ordered those off ebay. first problem these are the hose clamp style and there is only room for one the one hose clamp.... not that bad but still kind of hanging your butt out there asking for karma to kick you considering how they had the others crimped on there.

I started tightening up the itty bitty teeny tiny hose clamp and pop, it's skipping, 3 of the clamps are breeze and the third is ideal, the breeze clamps and way more flimsy....

after this experience i am kind of left with doing like Mach4 and braising on some ends(i would more than trust that but that's what i do) going the full Mach4 route or replacing the lines all together. I would like to drive this thing for another 20 years so my guess is probably all new lines

thought?

When I did mine on my 79 300D I used T-Bar clamps (available at any autoparts store) and there was just enough room for two on each fitting. I would not trust worm type clamps as I have had to many of them fail...

yep i have used those before usually on larger hoses for dredging equipment. I think i would actually live with one of those over a half dozen(if you could get them on there) screw clamps.

Three of the four are good solutions.

I chose the AN solution and through 40k miles I'm happy. I figure if it's good enough for critical aircraft applications it's good enough for me. That having been said, other solutions are good too.

Yep will check around monday and see if i can find some t-bar clamps or if anyone can order them in for me reasonably priced in a day or two or i will have to order from ebay or amazon. I bought enough hose, which is listed as AN10, and should i want to go with different fittings i will be able to do so. After i tore into this today i am actually wondering about installing a fitting like yours into the oil cooler then running braided stainless all the way back to the oil filter if i could find fitting that would thread into that.

i could also make one of these to get me by
Introduction to the Haywire Klamper - YouTube
or these
Clamptite - YouTube

there are a couple other designs out there too of these tools but don't think i would have the room to use it anyway, kind of cool though.

There is no way to clamp braided steel line....you need to use what I used...only way if you want to go the clamp route..

You can do that, just make sure the hose rating is 275F rated or higher but truthful the clamps make all the difference, the clamps I used could be torqued down with out skipping a tooth....which makes all the difference for holding the hose on tight.

X2. I have seen that same mistake many times on Trucks and other equipment. The Clamps have to be able to compress the Rubber and the Steel Braiding prevents that. I have seen old Hoses like that slip off.

Besides that the Mercedes Manual has that the highest Possible Oil Pressure isd 110 psi. So the Braided Steel Hose is over kill.

I went and did some more looking and there are hose clamps used on stainless but with the inner and outer layers it is asking a lot to hold it on and it may loosen. as you know the OE hose has no steel so just maybe find some good hose, nylon outer braid maybe... i got stuck mostly on the temp and kind of threw blinders on i guess, might not help looking for this stuff when i should be sleeping too.

Summit sells adapters that can go from the oil filter housing canister to AN fittings. Then you can use parker pushlok hose and fittings. High quality hose rated to 300+ psi, and fittings rated to the same, no hose clamps, easy install.

I looked up My thread and while the Hose I used had a lower Temperature rating of 195 degrees F then it should have but that Hose has been on the Car since 11-11-2007.

The Hose itself looks as it did when I insalled it no exterior deterioration. However, I do have one end that is wet but does not drip.

I have already bought some replacement Hose last Year but never gotten around to changing it.
