Is it worth restoring ?
I've already posted about rough idle problems.
I just purchased a 1993 300D with 173K on it. the body is in good shape no dents, no rust, chrome shiny , sun roof non functioning. fresh inspection sticker but it imho it needs four new tires. two out of the four speakers work and radio is effectively useless. the interior is good. engine has rough idle and shifts a little funny, the two are related I'm sure. I paid 4k for it. Now I can hillbilly repair it like my two Diesel trucks or I could go down town and let Hans and Ragnar do it right. If I get this thing back to at least "CarMax" quality would it be close to retaining any value or would I be better off turning the back seat and trunk into a pickup bed? I like the idea of having another BioD vehicle and I need a car that my orchestra violin playing daughter won't be embarrassed to be seen it. Is it worth dropping a grand or two into in the long run? |

Absolutely, looks like a nice car and the things you described are not out of the ordinary for a car of this vintage. Surely its worth putting some money into. A decent w124 gasser is hard to come by these days much less with the diesel. I think the w124 is the new w123 in terms that they are near impossible to find nice examples.

In the states you can usually find a pretty good example for $2000-3000 ish for a W124. A really nice one would be more, but people sell decent ones for cheap over here.
The diesel ones were much less common over here though, and have a weird diesel appeal to them. Would be a good driver worth the investment.

If you are planning on keeping the car for a long time then yes it is worth it to fix it.

I don't know much about that engine at all, but is the oil on that aluminum tube that runs across the valve cover to a (turbo? Or airfilter?) Suppossed to be leaking oil at the junction like that? (Engine pic on ebay add link) Is it indicative of a leak somewhere that could be causing some issues? (Turbo seals/egr allowing oil into intake tract) It does look far enough from the oil fill hole in the valve cover to rule out an operator spill when adding oil? Any past pictures of that engine ... i have never seen oil leaking at that spot? Just a guess? I wonder if that might indicate a plugged banjo bolt that Whunter was refering to?
