Near disaster 1984 300SD

Going down the hwy & just happened to look at my gauges. Temp pegged out over 120*
Throw the heater on full blast & pull off the hwy--which brought it down to 110*
Both alt/H2O pump belts off! One shredded-- one hanging loose.
Got the one back on & limped home at 90*. Lost a lot of coolant. Also, one of the T-fittings in my coolant system
cracked and the next morning there was coolant all under the car and still dripping.

Some of you know that I just did my head gasket a few weeks ago!!

Still had my block test kit so I checked that. Am glad to report no problems with the head gasket
No overnight pressure in expansion tank. Must of pulled off hwy just in time.
There's a lesson in this: my advice to anyone doing a head gasket is
to replace your belts at the same time.

Jeff

New belts or not. Your attention to the gauges is the best advice I got from your post.

I am anal and rarely go more than 2 mins without at least glancing at the gauges.

i was taught well by my dad, thru screaming/yelling and the occasional smack in the back of the head but I always check all my gauges every so often when driving, new car or not, it's a hard habit to brake
Glad you caught that in time!

Cheers to that. My driving instructor in high school was awesome. Said to check our mirrors every 3 seconds. Just a glance. Gauges every other time we check our mirrors.

Glad you avoided disaster.
